Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Here's what I hope to see going forward:
  • Wedge [censored]canned at the All-Star break, pick an interem. In the offseason find a manager that isn't a complete [censored]ing moron.
  • Trade Victor for at least one near major league ready starting pitcher and another decent prospect or two. I hate to see Victor go, but he's our most valuable trading piece.
  • Trade DeRosa for a couple of decent prospects.
  • Unload the following (if possible) to the highest bidder: Peralta, Pavano and Wood. I know none of them have much, if any, value now, but if any of them get hot, somebody may show interest.
  • By late August, LaPorta and Brantley getting significant playing time. LaPorta continues to hit well in Columbus and Brantley has come around after a slow start. Hopefully Brantley shows enough to allow him to take over the leadoff spot next season and slide Grady down in the order where he belongs.
  • Move Sanatana up to Columbus and call him up in September. We need his development to be fast because Shoppach is not any everyday catcher.
  • Hopefully Victor nets a good young starting pitcher that's ready for some September work.
  • In the offseason, sign at least one decent SP to supplement the rotation: 1) Cliff, 2) Hopeful FA, 3) Hopefully Jake, 4) Trade acquisition via Victor, 5) Fausto/Laffey/Huff/Somebody else
  • Sure up the BP through decent FA signings.
  • Sign a capable FA 3B...doesn't have to be a big money guy, just somebody better than Peralta.
I know that's asking a lot, but it's not outside of reason.
that's a nice wish list and the first one is obvious that possibly Shapiro along with him.
I don't know about Victor. I am unsure of his age but I guess with Sizemore, Choo, and Brantley Laporta could play first base. However, that would mean we have to find a catcher. I know that Santana is good but he's not quite ready yet and I don't know if I want to rush him. They have a somewhat decent catcher in Columbus that could be a fill-in depending upon when the moves are made.
DeRosa is a no-brainer and could bring some young quality prospects.
I don't know about Woods since his contract is pretty big. It might be hard to move him.
Moving JP is a no-brainer but I don't know what you can get for him unless he would start hitting again like he did last season.
In Addition to Wedge, his entire coaching staff must go.
I would wait before making a move with Pavano until later in the season because teams in the hunt might be desperate.
Though we have anyone in the minors that is ready to play third base--Hodges possibly. We seem to have a glutton of first baseman in the minors but not many middle infielders to the best of my knowledge.
I guess I might get rid of wedge first and see how the team reacts with a new manager but who would that new manager be:huh:

The Sawks have always seemed the most likely destination to me. If they're still neck-neck with the Yanks at the deadline and Big Papi continues to struggle, I'd think they'll be willing to talk turkey. They have a pretty deep farm system, so who knows. Then again, Dice-K's issues may make them a little hesitant to part with premium pitching prospects.

I think the Mets may be another possibility with Delgado's situation.

Depends what they think is wrong with him... if they feel like it's something that will be fine in a month or 6 weeks... even 8, they'll be okay with it.

A couple obvious moves made today

Cleveland Indians activate Grady Sizemore and recall Tony Sipp
by Paul Hoynes/Plain Dealer Reporter

PITTSBURGH -- The revolving door keeps spinning for the Indians.

Center fielder Grady Sizemore was activated from the disabled list and is expected to start in center field tonight when the Indians open a three-game series against the Pirates at PNC Park. He's been on the DL since May 31 with a inflamed left elbow.

To make room for Sizemore, outfielder Trevor Crowe was optioned to Class AAA Columbus.

In other moves, left-hander Tony Sipp was recalled from Columbus.

Veteran right-hander Luis Vizcaino was designated for assignment to make room. This is Sipp's third tour with the Tribe this year.

Sizemore is hitting .223 (46-for-206) with nine homers and 31 RBI. He has 25 walks and 52 strikeouts.

Crowe hit .169 (11-for-65) with three doubles and four RBI with the Tribe.

Vizcaino, who made his first four appearances this year with the Cubs, went 1-3 with a 4.11 ERA. He struck out 12 and walked 12.

Sipp, in his previous appearances with the Indians this year, went 0-0 with a 3.12 ERA. He walked 10, struck out 10 and the opposition is hitting .148 against him.

Well, if we have a glut of 1B's, and-- depsite his struggles, we'll still have Shoppach, Torregas, Santana and Chris Gimenez.

Hmmm Martinez plays C, 1B, and DH.

But, even having said all that... soemone is still going to have to pay.

(Keep in mind also that Shoppach, Torregas, Gimenez can be valuable in trades too... as the add in guy for teams that might have much less depth, so if you keep Victor, but, trade somone else, the might add some value too... )

I guess I might get rid of wedge first and see how the team reacts with a new manager but who would that new manager be:huh:
- With Victor, it may be a bit of robbing Peter to pay Paul, but you have to prioritize the holes on this team. Yeah, Victor gives you offense at 1B, but this team is far from deficient offensively. Pitching, on the other hand, is a major need right now...everywhere. If you can net a good young SP, with the mess the rotation is and no help on the horizon, I don't see how you don't do it. Victor is 30 BTW, but all those years as a C have probably added more wear and tear to his body than your typical 30 year old.
- As for 1B, well, if he's not trade bait (doubtful), you do have Garko. Yes, he's a statue, but he does provide some offense. Or there could be a cheap vet to be had via trade or FA this winter. I don't know much about LaPorta's abilities as a 1B other than hearing he can play there.
- We'll have to see how Santana handles AAA, but most reports I've seen have said he's not far off.
- DeRosa, yes. Sucks, because he's a great kind of player to have around, but he's wasted on a shit team like the Tribe.
- Moving JP seems like a no-brainer, but it's a matter of somebody wanting him. Not sure if anybody would right now. He provided pretty good offense for a SS, but as a 3B, he's a liability...and that's exasperated by his struggles this year. Hodges, incidentally, doesn't look too promising. He's struggling this year and may end up as one of those prospects who never quite pans out. Andy Marte's still around!!!!!!!!!!!
- Pavano, given his current situation (shellacked his last two starts, complaining of a sore neck) has no value. If he comes around (given his history, doubtful), maybe some contender looking for a back end starter may show interest.

The team is pretty much a big mess right now, how you want that fixed pretty much depends on your philosophy. Do you want to try a quick fix and continue to plug holes year-to-year and hope it works out? Or do you want to just tear it down and build from the ground up again like they did earlier this decade. Lord knows Dolan isn't going to open up the checkbook to sign good FA's (especially with Wood currently spontaneously combustin), so option one doesn't look particularly appealing to me.

We need to see Jordan Brown at some point too.. he's not getting any younger... and if you need a Defensive 1B, there's still Aubrey.

Well, hopefully Grady is health and Francisco sits more now. Sipp has good stuff, but his control was very iffy in his first stint. That's a recipe for disaster in this powderkeg of a "bullpen".

At dime-a-dog night in Huntington last Monday, he threw several wild pitches........while he was warming up in the bullpen. Sounds like control may be of continuing concern.

:slappy: I'm sure that'll come around with the Tribe. With all those quality guys in the pen helping him, he'll be al....fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!

It's too bad the Pirates and Indians are having a rare meeting and instead of talking trash we're left with "my team is shittier than your team" discussions.
