Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Exactly why I want to keep him around. He's not a fulltime guy by any means, but he's a decent lefthanded bat with some power. Those are nice to have.

Oddly, I have little faith in the bullpen to keep this game in hand...

Jensen Lewis should have gotten the call as closer when Borowski went down. He doesn't get enough creditfor how good he is. Last year, some talking head at ESPN was saying he had one of the best transitions from off-speed to fastball in the reliever role. Just a difficult guy to time.

He's been one of the few bright spots this season. I'd just love to know what the hell is going on with the Raffy's that have made them do a complete 180 from last season...

I'm much less concerned about Perez....he's a soft throwing lefty. He shouldn;t be more than a lefty/lefty match-up.

Betancourt needs to pick it up.

More than anything, well not anything, the lineup takes precidence, I'm concerned with Carmona's control. Five more walks tonight, gives him 31 walks vs. 15 K's in about 40 innings this year. That's obnoxiously bad and it's gonna start to catch up to him.

Grab your socks, it's Borow...err Betancourt time...

Indians homer twice to beat Yankees Peralta and Dellucci connect for all 5 runs as Tribe rallies in N.Y.

NEW YORK: It was nostalgia night Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
No, not because the Yankees will move into a sparkling new edifice next year. This bit of wistfulness was triggered by the Indians, who hit two home runs in a 5-3 win over the Bronx Bombers, who hit none.
It was the good old days of 2007, when often? maybe too often ? the Tribe lived and died by the long ball. But most any Northeast Ohio fan will take last season's brand of offense rather than the nearly nonexistent attack that has bogged down this year's Indians.
Not only was David Dellucci's three-run blast off Joba Chamberlain timely, it was downright dramatic, coming as it did in a pinch-hitting appearance with two outs in the eighth inning after Grady Sizemore and Jhonny Peralta had walked.
''It's an extremely tough role,'' Dellucci said. ''You're coming off the bench cold. You're facing a guy who throws 98. You better be ready.

Upon arrival, Francisco starts in left field Young outfielder not expected to be a savior for offense, but will get playing time
By Sheldon Ocker

NEW YORK: It didn't take long for manager Eric Wedge to put Ben Francisco in the Indians' lineup.
Francisco played left field and batted seventh Tuesday night, as the Indians began a three-game set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
When General Manager Mark Shapiro announced the promotion of Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday, he made a point of saying that making one move would not be enough to repair the team's fractured attack.
Consequently, Francisco is under no pressure to be Superman and carry the offense by himself.
''You only get in trouble if you try to do too much,'' he said. ''This is a team game. It takes all nine guys in the lineup. I'm not going to be able to solve the problems myself. A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez) can't even do that by himself.''
Wedge isn't certain how much Francisco will play, but the manager has no objection to him playing against both right-handers and lefties.
''We're taking it day by day,'' Wedge said. ''That's just where we are right now. He has some control, but I don't see him playing every day.''

Dellucci's pinch-hit homer lifts Cleveland Indians over Yankees

Plain Dealer Reporter
New York- He wanted the whole game on his shoulders. He got the whole game on his shoulders.
That's how David Dellucci takes to pinch-hitting.
Tuesday night, with Joba Chamberlain on the mound throwing 98 mph and leading, 3-2, Dellucci hit a three-run pinch-hit homer to bring the In dians from behind for a 5-3 victory over the Yankees in the Bronx. It was the 10th pinch-hit homer in Dellucci's career, tying him for third among active players.

Cleveland Indians know calling up Ben Francisco won't solve team's hitting woes

Wednesday, May 07, 2008
New York- Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro made it clear that Ben Francisco cannot cure what ails the Indians' offense all by himself.
Prior to Tuesday night's game at Yankee Stadium, Francisco agreed.
"Baseball is a team game," said Francisco, who started in left field and singled in his first at-bat. "Even a player like Alex Rodriguez could be going great, but if the other eight guys aren't hitting, you're not going to win. It's not on any one man's shoulders in this clubhouse."

It's moving day for Tribe as Jason Michaels goes
Ben Francisco will join roster

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro emphasized Monday that one roster move won't cure all of his team's ills.

But it's a start.

Shapiro announced that outfielder Jason Michaels will be designated for assignment today and outfielder Ben Francisco recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. Cleveland begins a three-game series tonight in New York.

"This one transaction, one move, is not going to solve all of our offensive woes," Shapiro said. "Jason Michaels is certainly not the primary cause. We just feel like it's time for us, where we can, to make some small moves that might help."

The Indians have 10 days to trade or release Michaels, who will be paid $2.15 million this season. He was hitting .207 in 58 at-bats, .125 (3-for-24) against left-handers.

Michaels certainly was not alone in his struggles. Six Cleveland regulars are batting .216 or worse. To look at it another way, Victor Martinez and Grady Sizemore are the only everyday players batting .265 or better.

"When there are five to seven guys struggling, and nobody exceeding expectations, you can't make one move, or two moves for that matter, and solve those problems," Shapiro said. "Our primary focus collectively is on getting the players here right now turned around and performing at a level we expected them to perform."

they both massively overachieved last year. this year, like the rest of the team, they are underachieving.

betancourt needs to utilize his offspeed pitches more. last year his arsenal consisted of shaving the black at the knees. having that type of control consistently is almost impossible. he's illustrating that this year.

Spot on! Raffy does not use his offspeed stuff at all and the hitters are just sitting on his fastball and parking it.
