CLEVELAND Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro emphasized Monday that one roster move won't cure all of his team's ills.
But it's a start.
Shapiro announced that outfielder Jason Michaels will be designated for assignment today and outfielder Ben Francisco recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. Cleveland begins a three-game series tonight in New York.
"This one transaction, one move, is not going to solve all of our offensive woes," Shapiro said. "Jason Michaels is certainly not the primary cause. We just feel like it's time for us, where we can, to make some small moves that might help."
The Indians have 10 days to trade or release Michaels, who will be paid $2.15 million this season. He was hitting .207 in 58 at-bats, .125 (3-for-24) against left-handers.
