Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Jensen Lewis is latest Indians reliever to struggle

CLEVELAND Jensen Lewis, meet Scott Norwood.

Football fans will remember Norwood as the Buffalo kicker who shanked a 47-yard field goal attempt with 8 seconds to play in Super Bowl XXV, a 20-19 loss to the New York Giants. Baseball fans will remember Lewis (for at least a day or two) as the Cleveland relief pitcher who served up Jason Varitek's tie-breaking home run in the ninth inning of the Indians' 5-3 loss to Boston at Progressive Field on Tuesday night.

"That's the cruelty of the game," said Lewis, the 23-year-old right-hander who put up a solid debut season in 2007. "In the bullpen, you're a field-goal kicker. You get it done or you don't. There's no gray area."

Borowski will be 37 in May. There is a reason his arm flunked a physical when the Phillies wanted to sign him to a two-year contract before the 2007 season.

The surprise is not that Borowski broke down physically, but that he stayed together long enough to save 45 games a year ago.
I guess this shows how smart are front office was in signing Joe Blow. The Phillies don't sign him because of his arm but we take him. Stupid!

This is the time if year when I have to temporarily give up on the Indians. They are playing so poorly that it's painful to watch. Hopefully they come out of the slump by the time the Cavs season is over or I'll have a lot of free time on my hands.

Watching the Cavs, but it looks like the Indians might be able to afford CC after all.
No shit. It's like he's still shellshocked from the LCS.:(

I'm inching closer to the ledge now. This team is beyond awful right now. Making another unknown pitcher look like a Cy Young winner. :smash:

I think it's safe to assume the Tigers are abount to get on track....it's not just one win, it's the way they came back and won.

Couple that with the lashing Leyland gave them yesterday, and it's the perfect recipe for a "hot" streak and a great opportunity to hear about every single day for the next 3 months from Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter.

It will happen.

And it's begun. According to Karl Ravich, Jim Leyland pushed all the right buttons.

The Tigers are about to dominate like most thought they would. They;re too good to keep sucking.

...and in the meantime, these guys continue to do their best to channel the Tribe teams of the seventies and eighties.

what the hell is Kenny Lofton up too?

I lost track of him and google isn't helping me much. Yahoo fanatsy has him listed as NA but part of Clevelend.

I don't know why we'd have Dellucci on the roster but not Kenny.

Props to Dellucci for being our offensive output this evening though. Although he needs to make a diving catch for most balls an average outfielder easily gets to, and a pop-up dropped in front of him against Boston.

On the Geriatric List, I believe.

Fine with me as long as he plays like he did last year.....Tribe needs any type of spark they can get, and Kenny had a hell of a post-season last year. As well as Kenny has taken care o himself over the years I;d be shocked if he couldn't be productive.

Anyone know what's up with the guy?

Shaken Sabathia slammed again Tigers tee off on Tribe ace. Rookie starter holds down Indians' offense
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Thursday, Apr 17, 2008
CLEVELAND: One thing you can say about C.C. Sabathia: He hasn't gotten progressively worse with each start.
Wednesday night before an outraged throng of home fans, the ace of the Indians' staff and the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner gave up nine runs in four innings in what eventually became a 13-2 win for the Detroit Tigers.
In his previous start, last Friday against the Oakland A's, Sabathia was pummeled for nine runs in only 31/3 innings. So the outing Wednesday night was an upgrade to be sure.
But seriously, folks. . . .
Of his rude treatment by Tribe partisans, Sabathia said, ''I'd boo myself. If you deserve it, what can you say?''
It is well past the time when Tribe manager Eric Wedge can merely hope that Sabathia emerges from the fog that has enveloped him.

Batting averages dip with mercury Latin players especially look forward to higher temperatures at ballpark
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Thursday, Apr 17, 2008
CLEVELAND: The theory: Players who grow up in Latin America hate cold weather and perform poorly when the temperature plummets.
But is it true? Seems logical enough. A player accustomed to 80-degree temperatures every day of his life in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic or Venezuela cannot be expected to achieve at his usual level when the game is played in a ballpark where the fans are wearing ski caps and wrapped in blankets.
The Indians have played only four games this season in which the temperature was 45 degrees or lower.
Five Latin players ? Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta, Franklin Gutierrez, Asdrubal Cabrera and Andy Marte ? have played in those games. Marte actually only played in one.
