Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

There's a red moon rising
On the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

There's a red moon rising
ON the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

There's an oil barge winding
Down the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

There's an oil barge winding
Down the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

Cleveland city of light city of magic
Cleveland city of light you're calling me
Cleveland, even now I can remember
'Cause the Cuyahoga River
Goes smokin' through my dreams

Burn on, big river, burn on
Burn on, big river, burn on
Now the Lord can make you tumble
And the Lord can make you turn
And the Lord can make you overflow
But the Lord can't make you burn

Burn on, big river, burn on
Burn on, big river, burn on

The best part about all of this, is that not only do we continue to play these douchebags who couldn't hit there way out of a paper bag, we generally get to see them in the #2 or #3 hole.

It's as if Eric Wedge and management are giving Clevelanders a big FU. Not only will they continue to play Dellucci and Michaels, they will put them in key spots in the batting order.

Apparently Casey and Franklin would be extremely offended if you took them out of the #9 and #8 slots.

And Ben Francisco's toiling away in Buffalo.

Hard to believe JoeBlow wasn't part of that roster.. guess you could bring back Mota's 6.21 ERA, or Cabrera's 5.19

we picked up Mota's twin brother in Jorge Julio so it's basically a wash.

I feel like we still need a right-handed bat to compliment the current line-up. If we aren't going to bring Francisco up, I wonder if we'd ever consider signing Juan Gonzalez? He generally stays healthy, and I know he never used roids.

Combined with BKB's suggestion of Danny Graves, and then Juan-Gone sliding into the 5 spot, we've solved the Indians woes on a message board. Good work evereyone.

Barry Bonds is still out there. There's a guy us Tribe fans could get behind...

no bull-shitting....I would gladly take Barry Bonds. His OBP and plate discipline is something every single player on the Indians could learn from. He makes any team he joins instantly better, shitty attitude and all.

I could care less he was a juicer, there are about 65 guys playing this year that were also named in the Mitchell Report.

I know it will never happen for multiple reasons. Mostly b/c we'd never shell out that kind of money, but also b/c we'd have a log jam at first base/DH.

Honestly, if you could make Garko a LF, put Pronk at 1b, and let Barry DH, it'd be as good an offensive line-up in MLB.

A pipe dream though.

Yep... he would contribute, no doubt. Out of 30 MLB teams, you would think that one would be willing to put up with the sideshow that would come with Bonds to make their team better.

Cleveland Indians lose to Boston Red Sox as Tribe reliever Jensen Lewis gives up two runs in the ninth

Lewis gives up two runs in 9th as Indians lose
Wednesday, April 16, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Different closer, different night, same pain for the Indians.
Jensen Lewis, subbing for injured closer Joe Borowski while new closer Rafael Betancourt was given the night off, gave up two runs in the ninth inning Tuesday as the Boston Red Sox beat the Indians, 5-3, to sweep a two-game series at Progressive Field.
Monday night, Manny Ramirez beat Borowski and the Tribe with a two-run, two-out homer in the ninth in a 6-4, come-from-behind victory.
@StoryAd
Tuesday night, Lewis (0-1) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to protect a 3-3 tie. He was not as fortunate in the ninth, but at least he didn't go on the disabled list as Borowski did Tuesday morning with a strained right triceps.
Jason Varitek, with one out, broke the 3-3 tie with a pinch-hit homer that just made it over the 19-foot wall in left-center field. It was the third pinch-hit homer of Varitek's career. Kevin Youkilis, after Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases, singled home Coco Crisp with Boston's final run.

Rafael Betancourt will be the Cleveland Indians closer until Joe Borowski returns from his injury

Wednesday, April 16, 2008
The Indians tried to keep closer Joe Borowski's injury quiet. Now everybody knows, and Borowski is expected to be on the disabled list for 15 days to four weeks with a strained right triceps muscle.
Manager Eric Wedge said Borowski injured his triceps muscle March 14 in a night exhibition game against Washington. The Indians gave him a few days off, and he's been trying to pitch through it.
He didn't make it.
@StoryAd
Rafael Betancourt will replace Borowski at closer. He wasn't available Tuesday night against Boston after pitching two days in a row. Wedge said he'd use Jensen Lewis or Rafael Perez if he needed a closer.
Manny Ramirez hastened Borowski's trip to the DL with a game-breaking two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning Monday. Borowski entered the ninth with a 4-3 lead and left with a 6-4 deficit. His delivery was skewed and his velocity was down.
"It was like going out there with an unloaded gun," said Borowski, about facing the Red Sox. "Even if I would have gotten them 1-2-3, I would have talked to the trainer after the game."

Cleveland Indians pitcher Byrd getting his game in gear

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 Joe Maxse

Plain Dealer Reporter
At least it was a start.
While he didn't get the decision, Paul Byrd did enough to feel good about his outing on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. Although he would have felt even better if the Indians had been able to take care of the Red Sox, going six innings and giving up a lone unearned run allowed for a bit of solace.
"Going in, I had a lot of anxiety because I didn't know which pitcher was going to show up," said Byrd, who came in with an 0-2 record and 11.05 earned run average.
@StoryAd
After lasting less than five innings in both of his previous outings, this was obviously an improvement and cause for better things to come. Still, losing to the world champions for the second straight night was not the way to go.
"That's what soured it," said Byrd. "It seems the broken-bat hits fall in for the other guys. We're just not clicking right now. We're not coming through and I've been a part of it. We need to get going."

Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto analyzes the Cleveland Indians' closer situation

Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Joe Borowski is out, and now be gins the test for the Tribe's front office.
Can they find a closer, and can they do it quick?
In 2007, the Indians won 96 games and had one of baseball's better bullpens. In 2005, they won 93 with the American League's best bullpen.
@StoryAd
Then there were the 80-82 season in 2004 and the 78-84 record of 2006, two teams with terrible bullpens.
That's why it may be the middle of April, but the season is at stake. They have to replace Borowski with someone who can convert at least 85 percent of his saves, which closers on contending teams usually do.
Borowski will be 37 in May. There is a reason his arm flunked a physical when the Phillies wanted to sign him to a two-year contract before the 2007 season.
The surprise is not that Borowski broke down physically, but that he stayed together long enough to save 45 games a year ago.
