Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Big Papa;1140004; said:
Not to mention that limp noodle of a throw to Second on the Lugo hit, that should have been a close play at Second at the very least. He one hooped it on that rainbow through he tossed in there. It's sickening watching this joke of a Left Field platoon and the failures of Joe Blow.

If by a joke of a platoon, you mean the #2 hitter in our line-up on Sunday.

And Jason Michales was hitting #3 while Victor was out. That isn;t a joke. That's serious depth and fantastic managing. Jason Michaels should have the #3 spot in the line-up on lock.

Casey Blake is not getting it done either

If I were the GM I would just let go of Andy Marte, Bring Up Josh Barfield (Who Is Off To A Good Start In AAA) Slide Cabrera over to SS Peralta Over to 3rd

well the Tigers built some momentum tonight, and we are going the opposit way thanks to a shitty pitcher named Borowski

One win equals momentum now?

I wonder if one of those young starters in Buffalo can close?

Call me crazy, but what about grooming Miller for that role? It would be less stress on his arm and he has the stuff.

I think it's safe to assume the Tigers are abount to get on track....it's not just one win, it's the way they came back and won.

Couple that with the lashing Leyland gave them yesterday, and it's the perfect recipe for a "hot" streak and a great opportunity to hear about every single day for the next 3 months from Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter.

It will happen.

Detroit's bats will come alive, but their pitching is suspect at best, especially the bully. For as bad as we have it right now out of our bullpen, our bully looks like the Nasty Boys compared to the stiffs that the Tigers are running out there each night. Starting Pitching is not much better, Verlander is the real deal, but after him, it's a crap shoot.

Eh, I figured they will, I'm just not ready to give it to them after one game considering how absolutely awful they've been.

The good news is that Jake looked good again. The bad news in Bettencourt is still not looking so hot and Perez hasn't thus far either. Those were the two I would've been thinking would step in when Borowski had his inevitable implosion.

Grady, Garko and Victor have been the only consistent hitters on the roster. Pronk at least showed some life tonight. He is the key. We need his big bat badly with the offensive vacuums we have around Grady in the OF. I was really hoping Gutierrez would emerge, but aside from opening day, he's shown nothing either. Don't get me started on Michaels and Dellucci. Absolute wastes of good roster spots. I'm really thinking Blake may be done as well. He's up there in years, and honestly should nevr have been more than a role-player/place-holder in the first place. What may be happening is Shapiro's lack of aggression in free agency coming back to bite him in the ass. Instead of going after a decent FA, he digs in the bargain bin for guys like the afore-mentioned Dellucci.

I'm not even close to the ledge yet, remember the '05 team was a .500 team through late June and ended up in the race until the last series. With a strong rotation, a team can keep themselves in the race. but things need to start happening. I don't know if Francisco is one of the answers or not, but he can't be any worse than the stiffs taking at bats now. If they don't get it together, I hope Shapiro has the brains to start shopping C.C. at the deadline and get some help in the lineup. We have some good young arms to step into the rotation for the future if need be. I actually somewhat envy the Reds for some of their young talent right now.

There bullpen will get healthy and their starting pitching is much better than people give it credit for.

Verlander is a stud.
Nate Robertson is solid.
Kenny Rogers will get on track.
Bonderman is solid.

Once Rodney and Zumaya get healthy, it makes there bullpen considerably better.

Todd Jones may not have the best stuff, but he's a good closer.

The Tigers aren't about to roll over and die. They will be right in the thick of things within 3 weeks.

Verlander is a very good pitcher, but has not done it long enough to get the "stud" tag, IMO. Robertson and Bonderman are hit and miss, pretty good in 2006, but horrible in 2007. I would take Westbrook and (now) Lee over either of those guys any day. Kenny Rogers is running on fumes and could break down at any moment at his age. That bullpen, regardless of who from their roster is out there, is garbage.

Ramirez homers as Boston rallies past Cleveland 6-4

By TOM WITHERS
AP Sports Writer
CLEVELAND ? Manny Ramirez wasn't sure if Indians closer Joe Borowski threw him a fastball or a changeup.
He was certain of one thing, however.
"It was right there," he said.
Then, it was over there.
Ramirez hit a two-run homer ? No. 493 of his career ? and Boston, down one entering the ninth inning, rallied for three runs against Borowski for a 6-4 win Monday night over Cleveland in a stunning rerun of last October's AL championship series.
Ramirez's shot to left off Borowski (0-2) was just the latest Red Sox comeback against the Indians. Last fall, Boston rallied from a 3-1 ALCS deficit to beat Cleveland and advance to the World Series. The stakes weren't nearly as high this time, but the Red Sox came through again.
And so did Ramirez, who hit his 132nd career home run at Progressive Field, which was known as Jacobs Field during the eight-plus seasons he played in Cleveland.
"Manny took such a pretty swing," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.
With the Indians leading 4-3, Borowski, whose every appearance is an adventure, came in to try to close it out.

Terrible closing act for Tribe Ramirez hits homer in ninth inning to give Red Sox win
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Apr 15, 2008
CLEVELAND: They can say it's early. They can say he's a veteran who will figure it out. Maybe they will say nothing of substance. But you know the Indians' deep thinkers are hunkered down fingering their worry beads.
Joe Borowski blew his second consecutive save Monday night, and the Boston Red Sox walked away with a 6-4 win at Progressive Field.
It was Borowski's assignment to hold a 4-3 lead in the ninth, but when Julio Lugo led off with a double, it was obvious that trouble loomed. Coco Crisp bunted Lugo to third, and Dustin Pedroia lifted a fly ball to the edge of the track in left, Lugo scoring the tying run after the catch.
David Ortiz followed with a bloop single (They will say it was a lucky hit), and Manny Ramirez whacked Borowski's first pitch (an 82-mph fastball) high and deep to left for a two-run homer.
When Kevin Youkilis doubled, Indians manager Eric Wedge lifted Borowski.
Here's a sign of trouble: ''It seemed like a fastball,'' Ramirez said. ''But it was 80. Maybe it was a change-up.''

Cleveland Indians closer Joe Borowski allows home run to Manny Ramirez in Boston Red Sox's comeback win

Ramirez homers in ninth as Borowski has 'nothing'
Tuesday, April 15, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Joe Borowski doesn't know what's wrong. One day he feels like he can throw the ball through a brick wall.
"The next day, I feel like I'm throwing through water," Borowski said.
Monday night, Borowski should have come to the mound in the ninth inning at Progressive Field wearing scuba gear. Boston, quick to recognize a theme, dunked the Indians closer, turning his 4-3 lead into a 6-4 defeat as Manny Ramirez hit a two-run, two-out homer into the left-field bleachers.
@StoryAd
Borowski met with Tribe manager Eric Wedge, General Manager Mark Shapiro and the team's medical staff after the game to discuss the condition of his right arm and shoulder.
"I hope we can pinpoint something," Borowski said. "Right now, it's driving me crazy. I'm grasping at straws. Maybe it's something. Maybe it's nothing."
He could undergo tests today.

If baseball draft prospect tests positive for banned substances, Cleveland Indians still will consider him

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
The restructured drug agreement between players and owners calls for the top 200 amateur prospects to be tested for banned substances starting this season before the June draft.
If a prospect does test positive, teams will be informed, but the player still will be eligible for the draft. If a player refuses to be tested, he will not be eligible.
Brad Grant is in charge of the Indians' draft for the first time this year. The Indians' first three picks in this year's draft are 29th, 76th and 107th. What would Grant do if the player he wanted to take with his first pick tested positive?
@StoryAd
"You'd have to take it into consideration," Grant said. "It's another piece of information that goes into making your pick. It would go along with our statistical, medical and psychological reports along with our talent evaluation and the player's signability."
