Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Now all they need is to find someone to replace Mujica, Betancourt, and our hot dog eater:)

Cleveland Indians call up Reyes, Donnelly
Posted by Plain Dealer Staff Reports
August 06, 2008 16:48PM

The Indians pitching staff will have a new look on Friday in Toronto.
Righthanders Anthony Reyes and Brendan Donnelly will be added to the roster in time for Friday's game at Toronto and the Indians are already listing Reyes as the starter for that game.

Although no formal transaction has yet been made, the Indians will option righthanded reliever Tom Mastny to Class AAA Buffalo and righthander Matt Ginter will go on the 15-day disabled list with a strain of his right forearm.

The Indians acquired Reyes from St. Louis on July 26. He made two starts in Buffalo and won both, compiling a 2.77 ERA. Donnelly was signed as a free agent this past off-season. He had been with Boston last season before being sidelined with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

Infielder Asdrubal Cabrera suffered a sprained left ankle in today's game in Tampa Bay and his status is being listed as day-to-day.

Cleveland's bullpen just threw batting practice to the Rays in the 9th... PATHETIC...how is Mujica or however you spell it even (does anyone care?) in MLB?
In a perfect world, nobody in that "bullpen" aside from Raffy Perez would be on a ML roster...they're awful.

Kobayashi really needs to go back to eating hotdogs. :p
I think we should pay our bullpen in hotdogs.

I'm interested to see what Reyes has. He pitched well in Buffalo and Shapiro saw something in him to make that trade.

Donnelly had some good years in Anaheim, but he's had Tommy John surgery so looks like just another retread bandaid.

Also, Gutierrez and his .220 BA batting leadoff? Yikes.

At least we're not the Tigers. With that payroll and the moves they made in the offseason to be playing that shitty. :slappy:

Indians first pitch: Off day's emphasis will be evaluating Hafner's status

Clubhouse confidential: The marriage between baseball and technology sometimes catches manager Eric Wedge off guard.

Travis Hafner hit off a tee at Progressive Field on Tuesday morning for one of the first times since he went on the disabled list on May 30 with a strained right shoulder. A few hours later, Wedge was watching a video of Hafner's swing on his computer at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
"Travis looked good," said Wedge. "It's a positive step."

Head trainer Lonnie Soloff will spend Thursday's off day in Cleveland testing the strength in Hafner's shoulder. Hitting coach Derek Shelton will be present as well, working with Hafner.

Hafner hitting off the tee. Now we are getting someplace.:(

Maybe he should bat leadoff all of the time. At least he got some hits today and we could slide Grady down to the 3 hole.
His play this season indicates that wouldn't continue. Gutierrez, as hard as it may be to believe, may be my biggest disappointment this season. I was really expecting/hoping for him to blow up this season and solidify RF. He has all the tools and showed promise late last season into the LCS. He's just been another bust.

Now that the current team is a total bust, I spend most of my time looking to the future. I'm really holding out hope that some of our better prospects can at least get a cup of coffee with the big club in September. I'd like to see Hodges and Crowe brought up to see how far they are from contributing next season. I know Hodges is still in Akron, but he's not some green rookie. He played four years in college. Marte has proven to not be the answer. I'd like for Hodges to get a shot.

Looking a little further out, this is how (in a fantasy world) I'd like to see things shake out at some point next season...
1B- Victor/LaPorta/Garko
2B- Cabrera
SS- Peralta
3B- Hodges
LF- Crowe/LaPorta
CF- Grady
RF- Francisco/Crowe
C- Shoppach/Victor
DH- Pronk (?)/Garko/LaPorta/Victor

That could concievably give you this batting order...
Crowe
Franciso
Grady
Victor
DH
Peralta
Hodges
Shoppach
Cabrera

Obviously that depends a lot on Pronk/Victor recovering and who's in the lineup. Also assuming that Crowe can be the guy to move Grady down in the lineup.

LaPorta is struggling a bit in Akron, but that's probably just adjusting to a new league and the change in scenery.

Hodges, Crowe and LaPorta are the top prospects and are all relatively close to being ML ready (assuming they stay healthy).

Of course the bullpen needs to be rebuilt. Hopefully Miller can help there. The starting rotation may look something like this...

Lee
Carmona
Laffey
Reyes (?)
FA (?)

It will be asking a lot for Lee to pitch like he is this year again, but if he can find a happy medium between the '08 Cliff and the '04-'06 Cliff he's still a top of the rotation guy. Fausto concerns me. Hip injuries can be a bitch and he hasn't looked the same since his first couple starts in April. Then you have to hope Laffey can regain his early form. That leaves Reyes if he can show something in this audition and a pick 'em from Sowers/Ginter and a possible second tier FA to fill it out. I'm writing Jake off for the forseeable future.

There's gonna be some lumps, but with a little luck, some of the past contributors will get healthy and regain their form and the youngsters will actually develop. Next year could be very similar to the '03-'04 seasons where we knew it was gonna be a rebuilding year and the youngsters got a shot and ran with it.

Indians fans will find this interesting!
The Sox have made an offer to free-agent pitcher Joe Borowski, but there's competition for him. One team interested might be the Mets, who have Billy Wagner on the DL. Scouts who have watched Borowski throw recently, however, don't believe he's major league ready and would need some Triple-A time.

Not a bad lineup but I think you are counting on the young guys to come through too much. I think Hodges and Laporte will be ready in 2010 but not before that and Crowe will go through some growing pains.

However if we do not get pitching in the off-season, it will not matter. We need to find at least one good starter and a closer along with some bullpen help. Hopefully, the rejects that they called up today will come through. One never knows.

I totally agree with you regarding Gut. I was really high on him also and thought he would be a much better hitter. He is basically just a situational player right now.
