Cleveland Indians fall 13? games behind first-place Minnesota

Twins back in first, Tribe wallows in last
Monday, August 04, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Minneapolis- The last time the Twins were in first place in the AL Central, the Indians trailed by a half game. The date was May 13 and things looked good for both teams.
The Twins, who beat the Indians, 6-2, on Sunday at the Metrodome to recapture first place, are 42-31 since that date. The Indians, who couldn't capture thin air at this point of the season, are 28-43 over the same stretch.
"The games are going to start getting big ger and big ger and big ger," said Twins catcher Mike Redmond. "We're going to benefit from having a lot of young guys on this team. Guys like Denard Span are joking around, and just playing the game. Being in first place isn't going to bother them."

Cleveland Indians believe Minnesota Twins can win American League Central Division

Monday, August 04, 2008
Minneapolis- The White Sox prepared for the stretch drive by trading for future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. The Twins prepared by reaching into their farm system Friday for Francisco Liriano and Randy Ruiz.
To make way for Liriano and Ruiz they dumped veterans Livan Hernandez and Craig Monroe. Hernandez was leading the rotation with 10 victories.
Today the Twins are in first place in the AL Central, a half-game in front of the White Sox, the team they've been chasing for almost 10 weeks. Liriano's victory over the Indians on Sunday propelled them into first as Kansas City beat Chicago.

Wedge wants new closer by spring Possibilities are many
Wedge meets to tell Shapiro said he needs a closer and Shapiro needs to get up enough courage to go and tell Dolan that they need a closer, another starter, a corner outfielder who has a little pop in his bat, and maybe even a brand new third baseman. Get those things done and we might be competitive next season.

I just don't understand how Minnesota loses Liriano for the majority of the season, is able to trade Santana, and loses Hunter yet they are still competitive (h,:pissed: I mean they currently lead the Division)

way to drop the ball against Minnesota, pr icks.
We win some, we lose some:lol:. Unfortunately, we lose more than we win. If the White Sox would win all of their games, they would not be in 2nd place so don't go blaming us. We have our hands full with Kansas City.We win some, we lose some. Unfortunately, we lose more than we win. If the White Sox would win all of their games, they would not be in 2nd place so don't go blaming us. We have our hands full with Kansas City. No need to call our team :pissed: we can do that ourselves very easily.:(

Ron Gardenhire is one of the best managers in all of baseball...we have Eric Wedge. Not to mention they still have a few stars on their roster that are healthy. I admire the Twins organization and hope they win the division.

Indians Insider: Reyes might make trip to Cleveland soon
by Paul Hoynes [email protected]
Tuesday August 05, 2008, 7:00 AM

The Indians turned their back on contention on July 7 when they traded CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. In doing so, they started evaluating players for next year.

Right-hander Anthony Reyes, who won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series for St. Louis, is scheduled for evaluation in the near future. Reyes is 2-0 at Class AAA Buffalo since the Indians acquired him from the Cardinals for minor-league reliever Luis Perdomo on July 25.

"We received real good reviews on his start Sunday," manager Eric Wedge said.

Reyes allowed one run on five hits in eight innings in a 2-1 victory over Syracuse. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter.

"He's in our plans," said Wedge, when asked if Reyes would be called up soon. "I think we'll have him up here sooner rather than later. How that's for vague? It's vague, but a precise vague."

Buffalo's season runs through August.

"We'd probably have him up here prior to that," Wedge said.

Reyes has spent parts of three seasons with the Cardinals. It's been reported he and pitching coach Dave Duncan did not always get along.
"I'm still getting familiar with him," Wedge said. "He's strong and has a good arm.

"He's been up and down for a couple of years. It's just a guy who hasn't been able to solidify himself at the big-league level. He's always been right there. I hope we can help him get over the hump."

Veteran Brendan Donnelly is another pitcher Wedge wants to get a look at before the end of the year. Donnelly, recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five appearances at Buffalo. He's struck out five, walked one and allowed four hits in five innings.

The Indians signed Donnelly during the off-season when they thought they had a chance to return to the postseason. He can be a free agent at the end of the year.

"His track back [from surgery] has been pretty consistent," Wedge said. "We'll want to take a look at him. That probably goes both ways."
Back in action:

Lefty Aaron Laffey made his first start Monday since getting demoted to Buffalo on July 25. The Indians wanted to work on his delivery for a while before pitching games in Buffalo.

"No. 1, it gave him a break," Wedge said. "No. 2, it gave him a couple of good work days. He threw two bullpens."

The Indians want Laffey to get back to sinking the baseball, throwing strikes and forcing hitters to make contact against him early in the count.
"We think he's going to be a solid starter for us," Wedge said. "Sometimes you need to catch your breath, go back down to work on a few things and come back here and be better for it."

Maybe, just maybe:

David Dellucci, who has struggled at the plate all season, had his first three-hit game of the year Saturday night against the Twins. He didn't play Sunday, but started Monday and smacked a two-run homer in his third at-bat.

Keep beating those Rays! Thanks. :)
Yeah that's right. You trade are ex favorite player to Los Angeles and now you want us to do your dirty work. We had beaten them 4 games this season. That's probably more times than your vaunted Red Sox have beat them. You might want to turn around and look at the Yankees because they might be gaining on you if they have not surpassed you:biggrin:

Geesh, you Indians fans are really touchy. I guess I won't congratulate you on a win anymore. :roll1: The Red Sox have had trouble with the Rays this year, so it's good to see you guys go out and beat them. We need all the help we can get. Oh, and get over Manny already. That was, what, eight years ago? You don't want that ass in your clubhouse.

I realize that but I would like his bat in our lineup:) and the only reason you were congratulating us on our victory was because we beat the Rays. Where are you when we beat KC:huh:

Eight years ago. It really only seems About 3-4 years:(

Um, KC isn't in the playoff race. My bad for not congratulating you. :roll1:

By the way, I like the Indians. I wish they were in first place. You still don't need Manny.

I know that Manny is a fruitcake but he is probably one of the best hitters I have ever seen and I go back awhile. It will be interesting to see when he goes into the Hall if you will go in as a Red Sox with the way he left Boston. He can always go in as an Indian:) because we brought him up.
