Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

So we take the money from CC and buy us a #3 starter and our rotation is above average.
Don't forget to tell Dolan to spend that money on free agents.
I disagree with a lot of what has been said including the fact that tsteele and yourself think that Westbrook is going to come back strong next year around July 1. I wish I had that faith but unfortunately I do not have it. Coming back from that type of surgery is a long haul. I will need to see more of Laffey before I come a true believer in him as a starter for an entire season. I am also somewhat concerned about Carmona and his hip but I guess that will be answered before the end of the season.

Re: hitting I think that Blake is way overachieving this season in comparison to what he has shown us in past years. Hafner has not shown us anything last season or this season before his injury. Also, will Francisco becoming another Gut because his batting average is going downhill fast. We also need 2 middle infielders who can, and least hit over 250, and be very good defensively.

The ball is in Dolan's court.

Just when you think things can't possibly get any worse, they blow a 6-0 lead in spectacular fashion for the 10th loss in a row. Unbelievable.

If this team doesn't lose 100 games, I'll eat my hat. They only have to go 25-47 the rest of the way for that to happen. I like those chances.

There have been some tremendously bad teams in this franchises dubious history, but I challenge anyone to find a worse team than these chumps. I remember the 1991 season well (would be my choice until now), but at least they had youth as an excuse.

It's 10 in a row and counting for Tribe

DETROIT The only thing missing from the Indians' road trip was a priest walking behind them reciting Psalm 23.

The death sentence on 2008 had already been delivered. Wednesday night just provided the most painful evidence as to why.

Rafael Betancourt helped blow a6-1 lead in the seventh inning, and Jensen Lewis served up Miguel Cabrera's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth as the Tribe fell, 8-6, to the Tigers at Comerica Park.

The Indians' eight-game road trip included the loss of their closer (Joe Borowski) and ace (CC Sabathia). What it didn't include was a win.

In fact, the Indians have lost 10 straight ? their longest losing streak since June 1979. History could be in the making. The Indians are two defeats from equaling the longest losing streak (12 straight in 1931) in their 107 years of existence.

LaPorta has three hits in doubleheader
Thursday, July 10, 2008

AKRON Newly-acquired Matt LaPorta had three hits in his debut with the Akron Aeros during Wednesday's doubleheader against the Bowie Baysox.

LaPorta, the outfield prospect the Cleveland Indians acquired from Milwaukee in the CC Sabathia trade, went 1-for-3 in the opener, won by the Aeros, 3-0. The Baysox won the nightcap, 5-0. LaPorta had two of Akron's four hits.

Rincon hopes magic returns
Thursday, July 10, 2008
BY JOSH WEIR
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

DETROIT Juan Rincon hopes new beginnings lead to some old results.

The veteran right-handed reliever was brought up from Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday to help a beleaguered Tribe bullpen.

The Rincon of 2003-06 was one of the best relievers in baseball for the Twins. He had a 2.93 ERA in 319 innings during those years, and he entered this season with the second most relief holds in the American League since 2004.

But since the beginning of 2007, Rincon hasn't been the same guy, sporting a 5.44 ERA in 872⁄3 innings. He was released by the Twins on June 12. Twelve days later, the Indians signed him as a minor-league free agent.

I don't mind all the losses... let's go for that #1 pick in the draft!!!! Oh wait... this is MLB, where top draft choices is like russian roulette. Maybe a 1 in 6 shot of a top 5 draft pick from even making it to the majors, let alone being good.

Indians first pitch: Is Lee close to All-Star start?

Clubhouse confidential: American League manager Terry Francona is saying that his starting pitcher for Tuesday's All-Star Game will not be named until Monday. The New York Post reported over the weekend that the honor would go to Cliff Lee.
Reportedly, before one of the Red Sox-Yankees games at Yankee Stadium, MLB officials went through a dry run to introduce the starting lineups for the All-Star Game. They were based on the last round of voting and some guesses. The Post ran with it as fact, but later removed it from its blog.
20-20: Grady Sizemore leads all active big leaguers with four straight years of 20 homers and 20 steals. Jimmy Rollins, Eric Byrnes, David Wright and Hanley Ramirez, all National Leaguers, have two each.

Westbrook should not even be a thought next year. If he comes back it will be near the all-star break. He either becomes a bonus player that adds depth to the rotation as a #5 starter or a needed bullpen arm.

I don't have that much faith in Westbrook helping us next year. The best case is he is a #5 starter or helps in the bullpen. Worst case is... well... he doesn't play at all. So in any plan next year they better assume Westbrook is a non-factor and is basically a bonus if he does anything.

Now about Dolan spending money... HE HAS SPENT MONEY! He has given Shapiro more freedom these past two years to go out and spend. The problem this past offseason is that there was absolute CRAP available in free agency.

the prevailing thinking is that while shapiro has had a little more latitiude with spending, he has been hesitant to dole out some offers in attempt to save enough cash to resign CC. Well, that didn't happen. We'll see if the Indians are a little more aggressive this offseason. They need a #3 or #4 starter and a bullpen arm, and probably one more bat. that can be accomplished with the money they were going to pay CC.

1960?1993: The 30 Year Slump
From 1959 to 1993, the Indians managed one third-place and five fourth-place finishes but spent the rest of the time in the American League cellar. The Indians hired General Manager Frank Lane, known as "Trader" Lane away from St. Louis in 1957. Lane had gained a reputation as a GM who loved to make deals over the years. With the White Sox, Land made over 100 trades involving over 400 players in seven years.[43] In a short stint in St. Louis, he traded away future Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst and fan favorite Harvey Haddix.[43] Lane summed up his philosophy when he said that the only deals he regretted were the ones that he didn't make.[44]

Arriving after the 1957 season, one of Lane's early trades was to send Roger Maris to Kansas City in the middle of 1958. Indians executive Hank Greenberg was not happy about the trade[45] and neither was Maris, who said that he couldn't stand Lane.[45] After, Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record, Lane defended himself by saying he still would have done the deal because Maris was unknown and he received good ballplayers in exchange.[45]

After the Maris trade, Lane acquired 25-year old Norm Cash from the White Sox for Minnie Minoso and then traded him to Detroit before he ever played a game for the Indians. Cash went on to hit over 350 home runs for the Tigers. The Indians received Steve Demeter who had five at bats for Cleveland. [46]

Lets not forget the Harvey Kuehn for Rocky Colavito surgery.
