Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

He's not at AAA because he's taking the natural progression through the system. He'll be in AAA shortly. I'm not really sure what you are expecting to get for a 3 month rental. That was a good deal. LaPorta is one of the top prospects in baseball period. I really wanted Escobar, but some people are actually higher on Green.

Like I pointed out earlier, look back to the Colon trade. It was a few years before that trade payed off. This one may come a little earlier. I think LaPorta will be MLB ready next year. Green will be a few years, but it was 3 years before Grady joined the big club full time. That's just the way these trades work.

they will have to make 2 roster spots in AA for LaPorta and Brantley

I wonder if Hodges will get promoted to AAA, maybe Crowe too? both are having pretty good seasons in AA

That would be my guess. With this season in the tank, I'd like to see those two get a September call-up to see if they're close to ML ready. If Hodges could play 3B next season, that would be great.

Here's the link from the Indians site...apparently contingent on paperwork getting done and the exchange of medical records...

I don't understand my Indians' friends. Just because a guy can hit in the minors' especially AA, does not mean that he can hit major-league pitching. If this guy LaP is so great why isn't he at least playing AAA. The Indians have plenty of AA and high level A players who have fairly decent batting averages. I really don't care with the Scouts say I want to see a guy hit high-caliber pitching first.

The reason he is in AA is because Milwaukee likes to keep all of their prospects together and move up through the system together. They did this with the group at AA now. In fact when they needed a spot in AAA to fill, they moved a guy up from A for a few days as a temporary fix.

It's just the way they do things. They create chemistry and a bond as they all move up together.

That's true BuckStocks. Exactly how they developed Fielder, Weeks, Gwynn, Hardy, Hart, etc.; also. I don't know why Litl would consider Laporta not being in AA already such an inherent negative. Ryan Braun was just starting in AA around the same time in his career. Laporta is actually ahead of him, and that Braun guy isn't too poor, is he? The Brewers want players to conquer a level before they advance. Especially AA. I would almost argue that AAA is almost a waste of time because there are so many career minor leaguers with garbage stuff there.

BTW, Brantley is not included in the deal according to his agent.

Pretty funny thread about the trade over on the scout insider board. Some dude claiming the Reds offered either Dunn/Griffey in a package with Cueto and Burton for C.C. and Victor, yet refuses or ignores requests to provide a link. Obviously an assinine deal dreamed up on playstation, but he says it's better than what they got. You can probably pick out my posts because they're the same things I say here day in and day out.

WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to acquire left-hander C.C. Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians, a source familiar with the discussions said Sunday night.

The Brewers will give up outfielder Matt LaPorta, left-hander Zach Jackson, right-hander Rob Bryson and a player to be determined in the deal.
Sabathia, a 6-foot-7, 290-pounder who turns 28 next week, is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA this season. He was last year's American League Cy Young Award winner.

LaPorta is hitting .288 with 20 home runs and 66 RBIs for Class AA Huntsville. Jackson is 1-5 with a 7.85 ERA for Class AAA Nashville, while Bryson is 3-2 with a 4.25 ERA for Class A West Virginia.

 wtf, a AAA pitcher with a 7.85 ERA?

nice going Shapiro

is that the asking price for Cy Young award winners these days?

You couldn't make this fucking season up.

A good prospect and two duds??? You have to be kidding me.
You ain't joking. That 2003 team was painful to watch, but at least it was young and there was a lot of talent on the farm. Not so now. The roster is littered with injured veterans, has beens and never-will-bes. Plus the farm system is bereft of legitimate prospects with the size of the rebuilding job on their hands. I'm glad they got LaPorta, he was the guy I really wanted, but I figured C.C. would net at least another very good prospect. It's hard to really gauge it because we don't know what other teams were willing to put on the table, but I'm far from satisfied if those other two are the names coming in with LaPorta. Hopefully LaPorta makes a Sizemore-like impact because if he becomes anything less than a star, Shapiro got taken.

Hopefully Shapiro can go against his M.O. and take some of that money C.C. would get and at least get a good bat or two and some bullpen help, but based on his recent statements and history, I won't be holding my breath.

Unbelievable.

Shapiro is already getting ripped by ESPN radio. What's the rush to trade C.C.?

His value only goes up as you get closer to the deadline. You trade him now for a big-tiome prospect and 2 scubs. You don't think Cleveland could have gotten multiple prospects from another team at the deadline?

Again, unbelievable.

What are these guys doing?

I don't really know. I'm torn on this trade. I don't think anybody else has a prospect on LaPorta's level that they'd be willing to offer, but he should have gotten more that just one good prospect. After all, a prospect is just that...a prospect. There's no guarantee he's gonna work out. At least if you get Escobar or Green you have another good kid to fall back on. The deal has gotten progressively worse as more details have come out. First it was LaPorta/Escobar/another prospect and I was ecstatic, then it was LaPorta/Green/another prospect and I wasn't all that excited but content, now it's LaPorta and two throw ins and I'm scratching my head.

This farm system has consistently deteriorated on Shapiro's watch, now he had a big chance to replenish it and only gets one legit prospect. Couple that with his statements that he seems to believe they're not far from competing and I'm legitimately concerned we're just backsliding into the 70's and 80's. Hopefully LaPorta is everything that's advertised and becomes a star making this all a moot point, but right now...who knows.

On a brighter note, I just saw Cliff Lee will be the A.L.'s SP for the All-Star game so congrats to him on a magnificent turnaround. Too bad it's wasted in such a forgettable season.

For a Cy Young guy who, after a rough start has lowered his ERA to under 4 and also has 6 wins with a lack of run support so far?

You'd hope that's for sure. Although the market is kind of looking a bit tighter this year than it was last year at this time. Maybe this was the best twitch in a mediocre market?

Certainly I'd be worried that if this was all they could get for CC, what, exactly, will they do when some of the other big guns come up for FA and/or a trade.....
