Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Laffey is there for long relief. Ie what if Westbrook or Byrd don't have it? In a short series your hook is quicker as every game is important, you can't give Westbrook 4 innings to get settled in (as he is known to do). You have to get him outta there to limit the runs given up.
.

I know what you are saying but Wedge has historically has a "long-term" hook. If I were him I would start warming up Laffey in the first inning when JW or PB starts.

Our probable starters for this series are a combined 4-16 limetime against the Yankees

I would think that's mostly PB's and JW's records.

Unconcerned. Sabathia is 1-7 alone, but he hasn't faced them this year and has developed a spectacular change-up since his last meeting with the Evil Empire.

This series (for the Indians) is all about Game 1. It's hard to call the first game a must-win, but with our ace on the mound against this Yankee lineup at home, they can't afford to drop to 0-1. The series would be over.

EDIT: I would absolutely love to send those overpaid, hired guns back to the Bronx and their pissy, spoiled fans down 0-2.

Bob Hunter commentary: Pair of aces could make a difference for Indians

Thursday, October 4, 2007 3:51 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND -- While it was raining champagne in the Indians' clubhouse last week during the division championship celebration, outfielder Kenny Lofton said that if the Indians teams of the 1990s had two starting pitchers like C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona, they might have won "four or five World Series."
Possibly for politically correct reasons -- you can never tell where Dennis Martinez and Orel Hershiser might be lurking -- Lofton backed off that some yesterday. He told one reporter that there's no way you can know what might have happened and later started back in the other direction, with a slight qualifier.

Indians notebook: Yankees will get first look at older, wiser Sabathia

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- If any record deserves an asterisk, it's C.C. Sabathia's career mark against the New York Yankees: 1-7 with a 7.13 ERA in eight starts. All eight came before the 2005 season, and Sabathia is a different pitcher today.
The Indians ace can cite the day and location of his epiphany: July 28, 2005, while throwing off the bullpen mound in Safeco Field in Seattle. He had been beaten up in his previous start and, suddenly, his coaches' words sunk in:

Passion by design helps Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge thrive

Thursday, October 04, 2007 Terry Pluto
Plain Dealer Columnist
Life is a tough place. Bad things happen to good people. The only way to make it is to work hard, do what you're told, expect no favors. Eric Wedge grew up in Indiana learning many of those lessons from his father, a Fort Wayne truck driver who later became a supervisor for his company.
As the Indians' manager said: "When kids came to our house, he'd tell them that he didn't care what they did at their own house or down the street, we have rules here. And you better follow them."
Tim and Nina Wedge were married in 1963. They moved into their current house in 1965, and they still live there. Eric was born in 1968. His mom is a registered nurse. Everyone was expected to obey their parents, not cause problems at school.

INDIANS VS. YANKEES ? Game 1
It's the start of something big for the Cleveland Indians, C.C. Sabathia

Thursday, October 04, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Eric Wedge, a rookie manager in 2003, decided to let C.C. Sabathia learn for himself.
Sabathia learned all right. He hasn't stopped learning and that education will take him to the mound tonight at Jacobs Field to face the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Division Series in the Indians' first postseason game since 2001.
No one has wanted to get here more than Sabathia. He talked about it since spring training, brushing aside all mention of a 20-win season and Cy Young awards once the season hit stride.

SCRIBBLES IN MY PLAYOFF NOTEBOOK
Chilling thought: Cleveland Indians hitters get quiet at home Terry Pluto

BASEBALL PLAYOFS ? INDIANS VS. YANKEES
Chilling thought: Tribe hitters get quiet at home
My biggest fear about the Tribe is . . . they won't hit. This team still can turn cold at the plate. After the All-Star break, the Indians were 44-30, but the main reason was because they had the second-lowest ERA in the American League in that span. But they ranked only 10th of 14 teams in runs scored. The Yankees scored 164 more runs than the Tribe after the break - that's two per game!
Las Vegas has the Yankees favored . . . and they should. New York was 51-25 after the All-Star break. This team can mash like the 1995 Tribe. They had a team batting average of .300 after the break! The Indians' pitchers should not be shelled by these Yankees, but the Yanks will score some runs.
