Cleveland Indians bring Cabrera into the fold

Wednesday, August 08, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Chicago- Switch-hitter Asdrubal Cabrera has replaced Mike Rouse as the Indians' extra infielder. While many fans applauded the decision, a contender exchanging utility infielders isn't the kind of move that tilts a division race.
But there is a hint of something else here.
Cabrera, still considered the Indians shortstop of the future, is expected to get a chance to play some second base. Starting second baseman Josh Barfield has had a difficult time making the transition from the National League to the American League. He went into Tuesday night's game against Chicago hitting .198 (20-for-101) with 11 RBI since July 1.

Indians chatter

Wednesday, August 08, 2007

Clubhouse confidential: The Indians re-signing of infielder Russell Branyan on Tuesday did not sound as if it would have any impact on the big- league club.
"He's just going to Buffalo to help them out," said manager Eric Wedge, bluntly. "There's nothing more to comment on that."

INDIANS NOTEBOOK: Adam Miller throws, still 7-10 days away
Published on Wednesday, Aug 08, 2007
CHICAGO: Adam Miller (elbow strain) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, using his fastball and change-up.
''He'll be examined again today,'' Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff said. ''If there are no problems, he'll throw a 40-pitch bullpen, using all his pitches, on Thursday. He's roughly 7-10 days from pitching in a game.''
David Dellucci (hamstring surgery) has begun baseball activity: running, taking indoor batting practice and throwing.
''He's progressing well,'' Soloff said. ''He's eligible to come off the DL Aug. 19, and we think he'll be ready shortly after that.''

Well, Tribe gets a win tonight, of course on a night that both the tigers and yankees win. Bats are still less than impressive. Byrd pitched a beauty (CG, 4 hit shutout) and has very quietly gone 10-4 this season.

Byrd deserves more credit this year than he has gotten.

I don't know if JP is agile enough to play 3rd base. I think if he could have played 3rd they would not have traded for Marte but what did that get us. Wedge and Shapiro have their favorites and Blake and JP are two of them.

You're joking about moving Garko or Victor to the outfield. I am faster than either of them and I can't even walk.

Sorta joking... I know they are both not fleet of foot, I just don't think Victor's future is at catcher kinda like Piazza..... And Garko can only play first and DH... What about moving Garko back to catcher? The Indians have too many guys who are one dimentional.

Never say never, but I think Marte is toast so why not move Peralta to third?

Hey how bout my boy Cabrera getting called up. Peralta to third or out door is coming.

Well, ya know, obviously Borowski blows the save, but maybe if the offense could manage more than four runs on nine hits over 12 innings it wouldn't be a problem. The offense is a joke right now and Derek Shelton is the Tribes answer to Maurice fucking Carthon. Way to go "offense".:roll1:

Way to go there Fultz, give up a walk-off homer to a .216 hitter
I'd wager the Tribe's team average is right aound that in the last month. I don't know why they bothe sending Barfield or Nixon to the plate. Just take the out and move on. This team is going nowhere. Oh well, at least the Tigers lost too.:!

Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore goes all out but fails to catch a fly ball hit by Juan Uribe in the fourth inning.

CHICAGO -- Juan Uribe hit a two-run homer off Aaron Fultz in the 13th inning last night to give the Chicago White Sox a 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.
Scott Podsednik singled with one out in the 13th and Uribe lined a ball over the wall in left-center for his 12th home run of the season.
Fultz (3-2) took the loss and Jose Contreras (6-14), making his first regular-season relief appearance since 2003 while with the New York Yankees, got the victory by pitching two innings.
A.J. Pierzynski homered to tie the score at 4 leading off the 12th against Indians closer Joe Borowski, who suffered his fourth blown save in 35 chances.

INDIANS NOTEBOOK Slumping Martinez can look to off days
CHICAGO: Victor Martinez has been in a slump for five weeks, and he looks like a man who needs a rest.
Since July 1, Martinez is batting .239 with four homers and 17 RBI. Tuesday night, a ninth-inning pitch down the middle bounced off his glove for a passed ball, and he and Ryan Garko couldn't decide who should catch a pop fly in foul territory, and it fell to the ground, prolonging the game.
