Sizemore pulling weight
Batting average down, but he's still finding ways to get on base
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter
Grady Sizemore has yet to catch fire at the plate. His .239 batting average is not where he or Indians manager Eric Wedge wants it to be.
But thanks to his versatility, Sizemore has not been the drain on the offense that his average might indicate. Sizemore's productivity at the plate is down, but when he gets on first base, he pushes the envelope to reach second, stealing 12 bases without getting caught.
That puts him way ahead of the pace of last year, when he stole 22 bases in 26 attempts. If he continues to steal bases at his current rate, Sizemore's total will top out at 55.

Ex-catcher Laker back as manager
Return to Tribe is in new job in minor leagues
By Stephanie Storm
Beacon Journal sportswriter
After 19 years in professional baseball, former Tribe catcher Tim Laker will make his managerial debut in June as the rookie skipper at the Tribe's short-season club in the Mahoning Valley.
Laker spent five of his past six seasons in the Indians' organization, finishing his major-league career batting .226 with 11 home runs and 79 RBI in 282 games. A sixth-round pick in 1988 by the Montreal Expos, Laker appeared in the big leagues for parts of 11 seasons with the Expos, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates and Indians.

Marte situation becomes cloudy
Tuesday, May 15, 2007
Casey Blake and Ryan Garko might be putting the squeeze on Andy Marte.
With Marte on the disabled list, the versatile Blake is settling in at third base. He has 14 hits in 10 games since May 4, raising his average from to .202 to .252.
Garko is batting .307, including nine hits in his past four games, and is playing a solid first base.
It leaves the bosses wondering what to do with Marte. Before being sidelined because of a strained left hamstring, the Tribe's Opening Day third baseman was batting .179 with one homer in 13 games and struggling defensively. In nine games on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Buffalo, he is hitting .276 after going 4-for-4 Monday.
The Indians could activate Marte, who was placed on the DL on April 23, and option him to Buffalo.

Tribe's in middle of it in Central
Tuesday, May 15, 2007 Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
Where the American League Central Division is concerned, the Indians have done their job to this point.
They enter today's game against Minnesota at 21-14, second place in the Central. The standing includes having lost four of six, the most recent a ninth-inning flameout Sunday at Oakland.
Of course, the Tribe would love to be running away with the division, but it will take what it can get, especially given the alternative. Through 35 games last season, the Indians already were in trouble in the Central at 17-18, third place, seven back of the Chicago White Sox.

Indians, Sizemore pound Twins
Tribe outfielder snaps out of slump with 4 hits
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter
CLEVELAND - It rained, but not on the Indians' parade.
In this season of the bizarre and the weird, it seems that every time the weather turns wicked, it costs the Tribe. But not Tuesday night, as the Indians buried the Minnesota Twins 15-7 at Jacobs Field.
The wind began to kick up, and the temperature dropped noticeably just as the home half of the seventh inning rolled around, but by then, the Tribe was home free.
It had long been an official game, and unless the umpires were of a mind to add nine or 10 runs to the Twins' total, for one night, at least, the Indians didn't have a care in the world.
And that included manager Eric Wedge, who watched with probable glee as Grady Sizemore collected as many hits in one game (four) as he had in the previous six.

Decision soon on Marte's fate
Rehabilitation assignment ends Friday
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter
CLEVELAND - What was an absolute certainty a week ago has become a mere probability today.
Consequently, Indians third baseman Andy Marte might not be the Indians' third baseman after his rehabilitation assignment at Buffalo concludes Friday. After that day, the Tribe must decide whether to activate him or option him to Triple-A.
Manager Eric Wedge has said all along that ``whenever Marte is ready, he will be back up here.'' Now, Marte's future isn't quite so definitive.
``He had a real good game last night,'' Wedge said Tuesday. ``But we're going to give it this week. More than likely, we'll look to get him back up here, but we want to give it all the time we can.''

Sabathia returns to form with win
He limits Twins to five hits, one walk in eight innings
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter
CLEVELAND - The C.C. Sabathia express experienced a brief derailment in Oakland but is back on track.
Wednesday night at Jacobs Field, Sabathia teased the Minnesota Twins then slammed the door in their faces, as the Indians earned a 7-1 win.
Sabathia lifted his record to 6-1 with a 3.65 ERA, limiting the Twins to five hits and one walk in eight innings. He finished the outing by retiring 12 batters in a row.
``It was just a very good ballgame by C.C.,'' manager Eric Wedge said.
``I felt pretty good,'' Sabathia said. ``I've been able to throw all my pitches for strikes the whole year.''
Last weekend against the Oakland Athletics, Sabathia suffered his only loss, giving up six runs in 6 2/3 innings.
The performance probably was expected, maybe even by Sabathia, who always has problems pitching near his hometown in front of friends and family. His career record in Oakland is 1-3 with a 7.17 ERA.

Indians will try to ease
CLEVELAND - pressure on Cabrera
Fernando Cabrera's recent string of bad outings calls for corrective measures. For now, he will be used in non-pressure situations, probably in the sixth and seventh innings.
``Fernando is a lot tougher mentally than he's ever been,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said. ``He learned a lot from last year. He needs to take it one day at a time and one outing at a time.''
Cabrera has blown three leads and two ties in his past six appearances.
CAP AND GOWN TIME -- First-base coach Luis Rivera left the team to attend his daughter's high school graduation in Puerto Rico.
Until Rivera returns for the game Friday night, Gary Varsho, the Tribe's roving minor-league outfield and base-running coach, will coach first.

In closer's case, slider rules
Borowski doesn't overpower with fastballs, but he's racking up saves in '07
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter
CLEVELAND - Joe Borowski does it his way.
Most closers, even those without blazing four-seamers, think fastball first. Not Borowski, who has all 12 Indians' saves in 14 chances.
``The slider is my bread and butter,'' Borowski said. ``I'm not really trying to get guys out with my fastball.
``I might throw one or two to a hitter, but if a guy swings and misses my slider, I'd be a fool not to stick with it. When you don't throw 98 (mph), you have to be a pitcher.''
Not even in his dreams does Borowski throw 98. So you will often see him throw fastballs out of the strike zone, then deliver several sliders in a row and maybe a split-fingered fastball or two.

No kidding! A CG shutout! Looks like he's here to stay. Now the question is what do we do when Jake comes back? Sowers better turn it around or he may be ticketed to Buffalo. No way should taking Fausto out of the rotation even be an option the way he's pitching right now.MolGenBuckeye;843294; said:Nice job, Fausto!
