CLEVELAND?
Job would be comfortable in this American League championship series. The first three games have been a test of patience: Fans nervously waiting for the next pitch, hitters stubbornly waiting for a better pitch, a television audience waiting through another adman's pitch.

CLEVELAND -- Masterful pitching will trump a power-laden lineup nine times out of 10.

The 44,402 fans at Jacobs Field witnessed that sensation last night when Indians right-hander Jake Westbrook stifled the Boston Red Sox, 4-2.

The Tribe grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 will be at 8:21 tonight at Jacobs Field.

Westbrook brought his ''A'' game to the park last night. He threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two runs and three walks.

Soft tossers take center stage

CLEVELAND -- Neither pitcher breaks 88 mph on the radar gun, but don't equate lack of speed with an inability to get the job done.

Game 4 pitchers Paul Byrd of the Indians and Tim Wakefield of the Red Sox are, obviously, not hard throwers. But both know how to pitch, and can render powerful offenses helpless when their stuff is on.

''This may be the slowest throwing right-handed matchup of all-time in the postseason,'' Byrd joked. ''It'll be fun to lock horns with Tim.''

Nixon's big hit earns him start in Game 3

CLEVELAND -- Trot Nixon's tie-breaking pinch-hit RBI single that helped trigger a seven run rally in the 11th inning of Game 2 of the American League Championship Series earned Nixon a start in Game 3.

Nixon was in the Indians' starting lineup last night in right field, replacing Franklin Gutierrez. Ironically, it was Gutierrez's three-run home run that capped that seven-run Indians rally in Game 2.

''The last couple of times Trot has been in there he's done well,'' said Indians manager Eric Wedge prior to the game. ''And it's good to get another left-handed bat in there against this guy (Daisuke Matsuzaka).''

Gutierrez had started in right field in four of the Indians' first six postseason games. Jason Michaels and Nixon each got one start in right in the Division Series vs. the Yankees.

THIS is great art, high theater and gastro-intestinally dangerous.

More, please.

Proving they can win games after AND before midnight, the Indians last night grinded out a workmanlike 4-2 win over Boston, giving the Tribe a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.

The Indians did it the way the Indians have to do it -- just ask them -- with contributions from everyone.

Boston?

The good news is, with the series definately in Denver, I can go to a game.:groove:

The bad news, if the Tribe gets there, I don't wanna have to play the Rockies right now.

Hopefully with all the time off between now and the World Series the Rockies will cool off a little bit... that's my hope at least.

Let's take care of the Red Sox before we start talking about the Rockies. Anything you might say about us already being in the WS might be construed as a jinx.:)

I'm getting a little concerned about getting this game in tonight... Beckett will pitch tomorrow if it gets rained out, I imagine.

In looking at the radar, it looks like all of the rain it is already in Ohio and going from west to east. Hopefully, it will get by Cleveland by early evening. I guess that's the advantage, and probably the only one, of having such a late start.
