Tribe pitcher delivers strikeout against fear

Friday, January 19, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
One of the reasons Dennis Eckersley made the Hall of Fame is because he saved 390 games. Eckersley had no problem saying that he was scared stiff for every one of those saves.
Joe Borowski knows the feeling.
"Fear drives me," said Borowski.

Nixon to Indians

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff

The original dirt dog is now an Indian.

Former Red Sox right fielder Trot Nixon has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians for $3 million. The Red Sox had elected not to offer salary arbitration to Nixon, a Type B free agent, who was paid $6.5 million last season. Nixon hit .278 in his 10 seasons with the Red Sox and hit 133 home runs while driving in 523 runs.

Nixon, who said he will wear No. 33 for the Indians, is expected to platoon in Cleveland's right field with Casey Blake. Today's Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Trot could increase his base salary of $3 million to $5 million this season if he earns all his performance bonuses.

Sunday, January 21, 2007
TRIBAL WRITES ANDY CALL

One of new Indians relief pitcher Joe Borowski?s friends is former professional boxer Chuck Wepner, who lost a memorable 15-round heavyweight fight to Mohammad Ali in Cleveland in 1975.
?I see him at home (Bayonne, N.J.) every once in a while,? Borowski said. ?Chuck is a good guy. He still looks just like he did when he fought Ali.?

Peralta all busyness during off-season

Sunday, January 21, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
The message on Jhonny Peralta's T-shirt read well for the time of year. It said, "Burning the Midnight Oil."
The Indians wanted Peralta to be a busy man this off-season, and he has been. In December, he worked out at the Indians baseball academy in the Dominican Republic with teammates Andy Marte and Hector Luna.

Tony Sipp makes batters miss and Tribe brass has taken notice
Monday, January 22, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Tony Sipp won't be on the Indi ans' annual winter press tour that begins today. It's for big league players only, but Sipp probably doesn't mind because his days of boarding buses and visiting cities throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania in the middle of January might not be far away.

Signing may cost Choo job

Wednesday, January 24, 2007 Paul Hoynes

Plain Dealer Reporter
News and notes from the Tribe's annual press tour:
The Indians' signing of Trot Nixon probably cost Shin-Soo Choo a job. Before Nixon's arrival, Choo was scheduled to platoon in right field with Casey Blake.
"I still have a better chance here than in Seattle," said Choo. "In Seattle, Ichiro [Suzuki] was in right field and Raul Ibanez in left."
