By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Tribe to see three stars in line for big bucks

TRIBAL WRITES ANDY CALL

Oakland A?s fans know the drill. Indians fans might need a while to get used to the idea.
The A?s have drafted or developed young All-Star caliber players, only to see those players leave for teams in bigger markets with more money to spend. Just think of an Oakland roster with Johnny Damon, Miguel Tejada, Jermaine Dye and Jason Giambi atop the batting order and Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito in the rotation. Not bad.

I'm not a big fan of a "patchwork" bullpen, but anything has to be an upgrade over last season, right?

One of the hardest things to predict is how a reliever is going to do in a certain year in the MLB so it is hard to say but going along with that a couple veterans that have done it before sure can't hurt.

Sabathia, Tribe have two years to work deal
Saturday, January 13, 2007
By Andy Call REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND C.C. Sabathia maintains he doesn?t pay much attention to what goes on in baseball during the offseason.
?I?m watching football or basketball,? Sabathia said. ?My mom tells me who we?ve signed.? A few transactions caught Sabathia?s attention this winter, however. Left-hander Barry Zito?s free-agent contract with San Francisco pays him $18.5 million per season. Right-hander Jason Schmidt signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $15.6 million per year.

Shapiro hopes he's found some something
GM is mixing and matching
Monday, January 15, 2007
By Andy Call Repository sports writer

Sources in the Indians organization say no one has seen Mark Shapiro walking around the Jacobs Field office complex recently shouting ?Eureka!?

But Cleveland?s General Manager ? intentionally or not ? may be tinkering with a method for building a batting order that could become something of a future model for middle-market teams. The Indians, unable to sign star-caliber free-agent hitters, will instead combine the platoon concept with versatile players such as Casey Blake filling multiple positions. If it works, perhaps a ?Eureka!? just might be in order.

?07 Tribe counting on Peralta
Friday, January 19, 2007
By Andy Call REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND He is, in the opinion of his bosses, the most important player on the 2007 Indians. Jhonny Peralta doesn't act the part. He doesn't call attention to himself in the clubhouse. He hangs out with teammates but isn't the life of the party. His bachelor days are about to end, as he and fiancee, Molly, plan a Jan. 27 wedding in Avon Lake. He will consent to interviews but remains a bit tentative with microphones testing his evolving command of English.
