Wow this series is huge. At the very least the Tribe has to win 2 of 3. It would be nice if they could get even with the W Sox before the last series of the season. It's good that they now have a 1 game lead over the Yanks in the loss column.

another facet to not lose site of is the fact that cleveland now has the same record as boston. the red sox could easily fall apart with their pitching struggling of late. while i would like nothing more than to have cleveland keep the yanks out of the playoffs, if boston falls apart and it gets the tribe to october baseball, i can live with that.

So ya think this series might be big or something??? The Indians HAVE to win 2 out of 3. If nothing more than to make sure we keep the lead in the wild card.

I will make this prediction right now. IF the Indians sweep the White Sox right here the White Sox will collapse to the point that the last 3 game series with them will become meaningless, or maybe an "all the Indians need to do is win one game" to win the division type series.

However, they still have their eyes set on the AL Central title.

The surging Indians look to cut further into the first-place Chicago White Sox's division lead when the rivals begin a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.

Cleveland leads the wild-card race by 1 1/2 games over the New York Yankees. The Indians, who have won 12 out of 13, have pulled within 3 1/2 games of the first-place White Sox after trailing by 15 games on Aug. 1.

``They're in first place and we're in second,'' Cleveland designated hitter Travis Hafner said. ``Let's go out there and see who has the best team.''

Chicago has won 10 of 13 meetings with Cleveland -- a big reason why it has been atop the division the entire season. The teams have not met since the White Sox swept a four-game series at Jacobs Field from July 14-17 by limiting the Indians to a total of six runs.

Times have changed for Chicago, which is just 22-23 since Aug. 1. The White Sox enter with a bit of confidence after capturing the deciding game of a three-game series at Minnesota with Sunday's 2-1 victory.

``We're going through a tough time right now,'' Chicago outfielder Jermaine Dye said, ``but a win is a win and we'll take it.''

It was just Chicago's third win in the last 10 games. The White Sox managed only four runs and 18 hits over the weekend at Minnesota.

``The way we win ballgames over here is to score just enough runs to stay ahead of the other team and beat them,'' Chicago infielder Geoff Blum said.
Cleveland is clearly headed in the opposite direction, going a major-league best 33-11 since July 31. The Indians completed a 9-1 homestand by routing Kansas City 11-0 on Sunday.

``We realize there is more at stake, but I promise you we'll go there with the same attitude,'' Cleveland third baseman Aaron Boone said. ``That's just the way this team is.''

Left fielder Coco Crisp capped a scorching homestand with three hits on Sunday. Crisp batted .375 (15-for-40) and scored nine runs over the last 10 games.
``Why change anything now?'' Crisp said. ``We want to win every game, not just three in Chicago. But we're not going to get all worried about it.''

Chicago starter Freddy Garcia is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in three starts against Cleveland this season. Garcia has struggled recently, going 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA over his last four starts.

The 29-year-old right-hander is just 3-5 with a 4.56 ERA in 14 starts at home, where he has surrendered 15 of his 24 homers this season. Garcia will be opposed by Kevin Millwood, who is 0-2 despite a 1.29 ERA in three starts against Chicago this season. Millwood is 1-1 with a 1.2 ERA over his last four outings.

CHICAGO -- This can't be happening. Can it?

A 15-game lead, melting like the polar ice caps?

A magical season, turning messier than a mudslide?

This can't be happening. But it is. It's happening to those Chicago White Sox. Right before our eyes.

Aaron Boone hit a solo homer in the second inning and added a key two-run single in the eighth for the Indians Monday.

Seven weeks ago, the White Sox were 34 games over .500 -- and the Cleveland Indians were four over. Four.

So everybody who figured they'd be waking up on the morning of Sept. 20, finding those same two teams suddenly separated by 2½ games, raise your hands. We'd like to come hang out with you on your next trip to the Powerball machine.

But that's where these White Sox and these Indians stand right now -- 2½ games apart. With nearly two weeks of this season left to be played. With five more games left against each other. Amazing.

That gap shrunk by yet another game Monday night, from 3½ down to 2½, on a pulsating pennant-race evening on the South Side of Chicago, when these two teams finally met for the first time since July.

It shrunk on the second-biggest hit in the life of the legendary Aaron Bleeping Boone -- a two-run, eighth-inning, game-winning single off a man throwing 99 miles an hour (White Sox smokeballer Bobby Jenks).

It shrunk when a spectacular, roller coaster of a game ended Indians 7, White Sox 5.

But most of all, it shrunk in a way that made you wonder: Could it possibly shrink any more?

"You know what?" Boone would say later. "I know no one believes me. But we don't really care. We just want to keep playing the way we've been playing."

OK, we know he really, truly means that -- but let's rephrase that remark for him:

The Indians, as a point of philosophy, don't particularly want to care about those standings. But they're at a point now where they're not allowed to forget them -- because those of us who do care are rude enough to bring them up every 12 seconds.

Whether the Indians want to know this or not, they are now within reach of doing something not just historic but borderline impossible. Wiping out a 15-game lead with two months to play? What are the odds of that?

Well, we'll frame it for you in a way that will make those odds realllll clear:

• Only one team in the history of baseball -- the 1914 "Miracle" Braves -- was ever 15 games out at any point of any season and came back to finish first. But that team fell 15 back in the first week of July, not the first week of August.
• The biggest Aug. 1 lead any team in history has ever blown, on the other hand, is 11 games -- by the 1995 Angels. But these Indians already have made up more games than that in just a month and a half.

• The White Sox, meanwhile, started out their season by going 62-29 in their first 91 games. Only two teams in history ever roared out to a start that good, were in undisputed possession of first place after those 91 games and didn't finish first -- the 1978 Red Sox (up 8½) and the 1942 Dodgers (up 6½).
• But no team that started 62-29 or better ever finished its season by playing sub-.500 baseball for the rest of the season. The White Sox, we regret to report, are 28-30 since then.

The game last night was crazy!!! I couldn't go to sleep for an hour afterward since I was so wound up. First they are up 4-0 and I feel good. Then the Sox come back and tie it up, and take the lead 5-4. With 2 outs in the 8th Boone has a key 2 out single to score 2. They get an insurance run in the 9th. Wickman puts 2 guys on but gets another ugly save off of the Sox best hitter.
The Tribe needed that game in the worst way, to show the Sox that they no longer own them. If the Sox had come back from 4 down and won the Indians might have gone in the tank for the rest of the series. We wait all season for the games to mean this much through the top of the whole AL. This has to be the most uncertain playoff picture in a whole league that I've ever seen. Don't look now but the Indians have the second best record in the AL.

I read and article earlier today (can't find it anymore) that had a good point to make. The W Sox aren't playing as well as they did earlier in the season, but their shrinking lead isn't as much of them choking as it is the Indians playing really well. The Sox are only playing about 500 ball over the second half of the season, but the Indians are only losing about 1 game a week. It's not like the Sox are choking away 8 out of 10 games and letting a team playing slightly better catch them, the Indians are just that hot right now.

World watching to see if White Sox hold on

By Mike Lopresti USA TODAY

Everything is fine ... everything is fine ... everything is fine.

This mantra is for the benefit of the huddled masses who follow the Chicago White Sox and are trying not to panic, even as they gape at the daily standings in the way brokers stare at the ticker during a stock market collapse.

The White Sox have led the American League Central every moment this season, including by 15 games as late as Aug. 1. But now the margin has nearly vanished, like shrimp at a cocktail party. And what opponent should be in town but the Cleveland Indians, who are suddenly fogging the Sox rear-view mirror. With Monday's 7-5 win, the Indians are 2 1/2 games behind, close enough to hear the White Sox gag, should they.

Nobody expects baseball disaster more than the citizens of Chicago (Boston was disqualified the moment the Red Sox got the final out last October). Though the sirens normally sound on the north side.

So Monday seemed a good night to check the Sox clubhouse before the game for any signs of a gas leak.

Pitcher Jon Garland was stressing that crisis is part of the natural ebb and flow of a season.

"A lot of people didn't see this coming, but I know people in this clubhouse saw this coming, just because we know the game."

Outfielder Aaron Rowand was grumbling how media hordes had descended upon the White Sox to count hands around throats.

"That's not the attitude of this team. That's not the attitude of our manager."

First baseman Paul Konerko said having a crowd waiting to watch you crumble comes with the territory of playing in Chicago.

"It's expected. I don't even think twice about it."

And sitting on a dugout step, the electrified wire who manages this team - the one who muttered after recent consecutive losses to Kansas City that "we flat-out stink" - said he had looked at the standings Monday afternoon and noticed something.

"I see St. Louis has 95 (wins). The White Sox 90. And we feel like we won only 10 games this year," Ozzie Guillen was saying. "Some people treat my team like a piece of (garbage). And we're not."

No, they're not. But they're trending south. They came from 4-0 behind Monday to take a 5-4 lead, then gave it back. That's eight losses in 11 games.

But two things need be mentioned.

¢ Chicago's lead in the division has shrunk like cotton, but its margin over the New York Yankees for the wild card - should the Indians blow past - is still four games with 13 games to go.

¢ The White Sox have not exactly imploded. Their 22-24 record from Aug. 1 is not truly collapse-caliber. The trouble has been the Indians. They have been losing once a week. Cleveland's 34-11 record in 45 games is what tightened the race, and brought the media equivalent of ambulance chasers to U.S. Cellular Field Monday night.

"All year we play pretty good baseball. Cleveland has played outstanding. We can't control that," Guillen said. "Now, we have a chance to control that."

But Monday wasn't very encouraging. A nearly full house alternated between relieved roars and sullen boos. Chicago is a basket case. Still, is it possible the team with the best record in the American League on Sept. 20 can be shut out of the playoffs 12 days later?

As Chicago wrings its hands, the messages coming in to Guillen's publicly known e-mail address - OzzieGuillen13(AT)hotmail.com - have not been letters to Santa Claus.

"About 40 (a day). All bad," he said. "A lot of nasty ones. 'You stink. It's all your fault. I know you're going to choke.' "

But the White Sox really haven't. Not yet, anyway.

The Cleveland Indians will look to inch closer to the top spot when the teams continue their three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Indians beat the White Sox 7-5 on Monday to move within 2 1/2 games of Chicago. The White Sox led the Indians by 15 games after a four-game sweep from July 14-17, and held a 14-game lead in early August.

``We all know it's there,'' White Sox reliever Bobby Jenks said of the shrinking lead.
Aaron Boone homered and added a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning for Cleveland, which has won six straight and 13 of 14. The White Sox, who got a homer from Carl Everett, have lost eight of their last 11.

Travis Hafner playing against Chicago for the first time since he was hit in the mouth by a pitch from Mark Buehrle on July 16, also homered for the Indians, who maintained their 1 1/2 -game lead over the New York Yankees in the wild-card race. The Yankees beat Baltimore 3-2 on Monday.

Right-hander Jake Westbrook will try to keep the Indians' winning streak going when he takes the ball on Tuesday. Westbrook, who is 9-2 in his last 11 starts, allowed three runs and two hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 6-4 win over Oakland. The victory was his career-high 15th and moved him above .500 for the first time this season.

``I'm pretty proud of that,'' Westbrook said. ``To have a 2-9 record and come back and be 15-14. You can't ever hang your head.''

Westbrook, who is 0-3 with a 4.95 ERA in three starts against Chicago this season, will be facing Buehrle for the third time. Buehrle got the win in the White Sox's 7-5 victory over Westbrook and the Indians on July 16.

The veteran left-hander also beat them 1-0 to open the season on April 4. Buehrle is 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star break.

Yeah... As much as I'd like to catch the White Sox... the Red Sox seem to me to be the ones in trouble... The Indians are rollling by them, the Yankees will be next unless they can figure out some starting pitching... fast.

I would be fine with the Red Sox or Yankees tanking the end of the season to insure that the Tribe makes the playoffs. I wouldn't care as much about beating the White Sox if 1 or 2 losses wouldn't cost them a shot at the wild card. As long as the Tribe is in a comparable (is that a word?) position to the AL East next weekend as they are now I'll be happy Central or no. Right now it's looking like next weekend will be pretty exciting in the AL.

I see that other Sox team is watching it's lead vanish, too.

It's about time, and I definitely think that we can beat any team in baseball. We also have young players and they won't wear down as easily. World Series for the Tribe? Maybe so. I'd sya that we can definitely win the AL Pennant. If we don't win, then we will soon.
