Indiana Hoosiers Basketball (Dead Program)

Thompson is one of six Indiana players who put their name in the transfer portal during time between coaches.

Thompson, point guard Khristian Lander, shooting guard Parker Stewart and forward Jordan Geronimo all have withdrawn from the portal and are staying at Indiana.

All-American sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who was heavy lean to turn professional, has decided to stay at Indiana for his junior season as well.

Senior shooting guard Al Durham transferred to Providence for a fifth year. Sophomore shooting guard Armaan Franklin remains in the portal with the option to play elsewhere next season.

All of their guys that entered the transfer portal are returning except for Armaan Franklin who is going to Virginia plus Aljami Durham who is headed for Providence.

They picked up a guy from Pittsburgh by the name of Xavier Johnson who I know nothing about except he is no biggie.

Money isn't everything. Some IU boosters must be confused by this development.

I don't blame Stevens for turning it down one bit. He has one of the plum jobs in the NBA right now, and I see little reason for him to want to leave. He probably knows he can hold onto the job he has and let things play out in Boston for a while, and even if the franchise takes a turn for the worse in future years, he could probably still get that kind of money in college later on.

Indiana's Jerome Hunter Won't Return for 2021-22 Season

Indiana's athletic department announced on Thursday that Hoosiers forward Jerome Hunter will not return to the team this season.

“We appreciate everything that Jerome has done as a member of the program and wish him nothing but the best in the future,” Indiana coach Mike Woodson said in a statement from the school.

Hunter, a 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore forward from Pickerington, Ohio, has spent three years in the Indiana program during Archie Miller's tenure. He missed his entire first season with a mysterious leg injury, and played off the bench in the 2019-20 season, averaging 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Arizona Transfer Oumar Ballo Commits to Indiana

Oumar Ballo has reportedly committed to Indiana. The Arizona transfer was the consensus top player in the portal and a two-time first team All-Pac-12 selection. He gives the Hoosiers their second commitment of portal season, joining fellow Pac-12 vet in Washington State's Myles Rice.

With All-Big Ten center Kel'el Ware off to the NBA, Indiana was in search of a rim protector to join forward Malik Reneau in the frontcourt. Mike Woodson's program found a good one.

Ballo began his career at Gonzaga but played sparingly as a freshman. He joined Tommy Lloyd in moving to Arizona, where he spent three seasons as a key contributor. Ballo was a starter the last two seasons, and during the 2023-24 campaign he averaged 12.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 25.9 minutes per game. He shot 65.8% from the field but was woeful at the free throw line, only hitting 49.5% of his attempts.

Indiana is attempting to mold Reneau into more of a stretch four, which should open up the paint for Ballo. Listed at 7'0" and 260 pounds, Indiana's new addition will add to a starting lineup with a ton of size. Reneau is listed at 6'9" and 233 pounds, while small forward Mackenzie Mgbako is 6'8" and 217 pounds.

IU is picking whomever they want in the portal. The problem is Mike Woodson is in charge. Jeff Goodman reports Oumar Ballo's asking price was $1.2 million. No way he was worth that, IMO, he's just not mobile enough & that can be exploited defensively. You'd have to be a real 2-way standout for that asking price to make any sense. IU will have an unparalleled frontcourt, the problem is they will go up against teams that have quickness and can execute offensively and work well together.
