Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

Big Ten Teams: I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself all of these years. I was in the war, Medical Corps. One night they brought in a badly wounded pilot from one of the raids. He looked at me and said, "Doc, the odds were against us up there, but we went in anyway. I'm glad. Captain made the right decision." The pilot's name was Ron Zook.

Ron Guenther (Illinois AD) : Ron Zook said that?

Big Ten Teams: Yes, he looked at me and said, "Doc," he said, "Some time, when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to get out there and give it all they've got. And win just one for the Zooker. I don't know where I'll be then Doc, he said. But I won't smell too good, that's for sure."

Methinks Zooki has a future in reality TV soon...

For better or worse, Zook probably locked up 4 more years with the Wrigley win over Northwestern on Saturday.

~ Bowl game this year, so no chance of being fired.
~ We might be bowl eligible when we play you guys on October 15th next year. We start with Arkansas State, South Dakota State, Arizona State, Western Michigan, and Northwestern (all at home), and then at Indiana.
~ Back-to-back bowl buys you at least 2 more years in Champaign, so even if 2012 is an uberFAIL (which it might be, given the way our 2010 and 2011 recruiting classes look), Zook would return for 2013.

This winter, it's now time for the Zooker to make his money. He was basically our Special Teams & Timeouts coach this fall (he had very little to do with the offense or the defense), so now is the time for him to make his $1.5 million. We have 7 scholarships left to give and no 4-stars on board. With a bowl to sell, there's no excuse to not get some 4-stars to pop.

Re: Lemming says Zook is the nations 5th best recruiter per HQ.

I remember this in my younger years as well...its crazy how time changes people. I agree that Zook has raised the level of the program and it is improving depth now. It's definitely on the upswing and it will continue rising with the players they have coming in.

In 2008, Illinois makes the Rose Bowl after the 07 season is finished and can't capitalize in recruiting. That is a major sign that his recruiting ability is vastly overrated. Since about 2009, the highly sought after guys have either been lost to other teams or Zook isn't going after them because he knows he probably isn't gonna get em.

I think he's about to prove a lot of people like you wrong.

Zookenation wrote: You been waiting to say that since the Rose Bowl haven't you? His two winning seasons at Illinois and worse winning percentage than Ron Turner makes you believe this?

Ron Turner is the reason he had such a bad start to begin with. That skews the winning percentage numbers. It still doesn't stop Zook haters like you from using it, which is funny. He quickly added talent and, with the help of some Turner guys, went to the Rose Bowl. The next two seasons had a bunch of problems within the coaching staff, but the talent was never the problem. The past couple of NFL draft can show that for me and if you aren't convinced enough, tune into the upcoming NFL Draft to see even more talent. Even with a two bad seasons, the talent level under Ron Zook was way greater than the talent under Ron Turner, and there is still a boatload of talent on campus with more on the way. He has a top notch staff in place including an offensive coordinator who just turned down Florida and LSU. Again, I think he's going to make a lot of people like you look stupid, well, again.

...and a real doozy...

I bet he gets a little satisfaction from that.

Urban won with Zook's recruits!!!

That's right, just look at the NFL ... nobody has done less with as much talent as Ron Zook has had since Lloyd Carr coached that 1999 Michigan team that had Tom Brady, Dhani Jones, and like 15 other guys that went on to the next level.

Or maybe not.

Re: 2011 Class #13 and O'toole in the top 100

HONDO3 wrote: Is this based on quantity or quality?
Don't know what to make of Lemming ranking the class this high, but I've been trying to tell people for the longest that this class is full of talented guys, so I would say quantity AND quality. There is some serious potential in this class and it blends nicely with who is already on campus. One other thing that cannot be understated is that these guys are winners. At least 6 or 7 guys in this class have won state championships in high school. Others come from tradition rich schools who are used to winning. That is one of the many underlying factors for this class. It's not just about talent and potential. It has intangibles as well, led by a prospect who I think is a future franchise type of QB in O'Toole. Again, they blend nicely into the players already on campus. I'm very excited about the future of Illinois football.

Every one of his posts, for three years, have been exactly like the one above. Their record? 15-22 (same as da Rod) and 9-15 in the B10. They never got those 3 B10 Titles or MNC he forecasted. But hey, brighter days ahoy! :slappy:

I just can't help myself.

Well that was me who made that comment. I'm FAR from a bandwagon fan to whatever OSU fan asked that...I'm a young Illini fan who has been a fan since before I got to HS. I'm hoping to 1 day go to Illinois. But anyway...

I said it and I meant it. All you have to do is look at my track record since I've been on these message boards (Mainly the Illinois scout board). It speaks for itself. You could talk about Scout and it's "text message speak" and endless free flowing kool aid all you want, but for a period (Talking about the '07 class with Benn, Wilson, etc.) you couldn't get any more exclusive with the stuff I put on there.

I told everybody before anybody knew Martez Wilson was going to Illinois. Even when he "blew up" and people said Illinois had no shot after USC and others offered, I let people know. I told them on NLOID '06 that Illinois would get both Benn and Nate Bussey in the '07 class. People laughed 'cause Benn was a national recruit and Illinois was really in the stinker. I hit on everything I said that year except that Jack Cornell was going to Illinois (Originally picked MSU) and that was just a gut feeling. Everything Juice told me was on the money when we were in contact. It was well known that I was talking/messaging with him and '06 WR Chris "CJ" James.

Enough about that though I really don't have to explain 'cause any Illinois fan (And a lot of others) know what it is. I think you're an example of the "old" Illini fan Roughy. I've read some of your posts and you seem to kind of back down to OSU fans and such who don't think Illinois can become anything more than a 2nd tier B10 school. You try to defend Illinois and stuff, but it seems like you're backing down a little often. I guess being "realistic" as you'd probably put it. But I'm telling you, watch how it takes off. I was being dead serious when I made those comments. Illinois is about to become very Miami-esque (Earlier this decade) when talking about pro prospects. You can laugh all you want, but watch exactly what I'm talking about. I was trying to tell people all before last year about last year's team. How good they will be. How certain freshmen will play better than their ranking, etc. And it happened.

I will be willing to bet Illinois has more than 3 DL's and WR's drafted in the next few years...off the top of my head, Benn (got one, good job), Cumberland (UFA, oops), Fayson (projected as a possible day 2 pick, likely UFA), AJ Jenkins (TBD, looks like a 2nd day pick), maybe even Joe Morgan (who?) (If he gets it together there is no doubt), Cordale Scott (well, no). That doesn't even include the likes of Mike Hooman (Who?) (NFL player for sure), London Davis (Uh, who?) (GREAT upside), Hubie Graham (yeah, who?) (Really good upside), etc. Plus depending on Brian Gamble (who? See a pattern here?), you can add him the NFL list if it he stays at WR (All B10 type) or goes back to S (Where I think he is AA type). (Guess his AA trophy is right next to their Crystal Ball, LOL)

Off the top of my head from the DL, Josh Brent (1st rounder when he comes out after his junior year, bank it) (7th rounder, the bank laughed at me), Will Davis (Guy is up to 260+ pounds and still running a 4.6 as well as benching 225 20 times 3 times daily...plus a 38 inch vert) (oops, 6th round), Jerry Brown (Was my pick to click last year but he was young so he gets a pass...my pick again this year) (Who?), D'Angelo McCray (Wait 'til you see him) (Who?), Whitney Mercilus (Will Davis part 2 but faster and bigger at the same stage:yow2:) (Again, who?), Corey Liuget (TBD, looks like a possible first rounder. Congrats!). That doesn't even include guys like Reggie Ellis (Good upside) (Who?), Glenn Foster (Another potential AA but might take a lot of time 'cause he is VERY VERY raw) (Who?, another pattern), Daryle Ballew, Sirod Williams (Senior this upcoming year but just thought I would throw him in) (Wha?), Antonio James, Ugo U (BIG upside) (Bigger letdown), etc. who will all at the least be very solid. And all this doesn't even include the DB's (Disgusting amounts of athletes coming in and already there led by future 1st rounder Vontae Davis), some of the LB's (Mainly Martez Wilson (Shockingly, not getting 1st round buzz)...he is an ANIMAL but Britt Miller (Undrafted), Rodney Pittman (Who?), and especially Ian Thomas-(Who?)watch out for him (still watching)-are all the main LB's...which is probably the only spot that isn't "there" yet) and the OL (If you thought this year was something, just wait until you see some of these other guys)

So I'm going to say it on here for those who are laughing. ILLINOIS IS ABOUT TO WIN THE B10 NEXT YEAR WITH A SHOT AT THE NC. I don't think they'll go to the NC but I do think BCS (15-22, 9-15, whoopsie). '09 is where I have them winning it (3-9, 2-6). I'm dead serious (That's what's so damn funny). Orange, this is not your old Illini squad (It was). This team has big, fast, aggressive, smart, and disciplined long twitch athletes who can run with anybody as well as out-tough them. The recruiting ratings don't affect this (BTW, if you like all the glitz and glam of recruiting ratings, this is your year), but Illinois has brought in classes just as good as any in the B10 and among the best in the nation since Zook has been here. Yeah yeah I know they've been in the top 25, but I'm talking top 10 on the field performance (Or not...). This is probably the best talent evaluating staff in the B10 (not really). For every Martez Wilson or Arrelious Benn they've brought in, they've brought in a Vontae Davis or Jon Asamoah or Will Davis. My point is this, yeah the Corey Liuget's, etc. are great, but there are players who could be just as good if not better with players like Whitney Mercilus, Ugo U, etc.

That's what sets them apart from others...if you think they've done something in the past though, wait 'til the future as I said. This '08 class is going to be special and there are more than a few high NFL drafts picks waiting to happen on it (Nope). I won't go through it as far as I can 'cause this is a Buckeye board (I already went really far) but read the Illinois boards if you want to know what I think as far as Illinois in the future (A lot of you probably are already seeing as though you've linked a post from me). I'm sure many will laugh but just watch...I'll be back a few times (A lot really) between now and the season and I'll DEFINITELY be back when the season is going on...

EDIT: I know that was a REALLY long post but just thought I would release all my thoughts from reading through this thread on my 1st post..(Bravo, moron.)

Zook's cleaning up in-state again ... only one of the top ten Illinois prospects is committed to Illinois, same as last year. In his six full recruiting seasons, Zook has signed only 15 top-ten prospects from Illinois (that's just 2.5 per year):

2006: 3/10 (#2, #4, #6)
2007: 4/10 (#1, #3, #5, #10)
2008: 2/10 (#5, #10)
2009: 4/10 (#1, #7, #8, #9)
2010: 1/10 (#8)
2011: 1/10 (#10)

I don't care what state you're in, if you can't recruit the top talent in-state, then you are going to get creamed. I realize that Illinois has Notre Dame near their territory, and Ohio State has become a big factor in the Midwest, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska are in the area ... but Zook is losing top kids to Purdue, Kentucky, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Boston College.

By comparison, during the same period, Ohio State has signed 35 top-ten players in state, with a decision from Aundrey Walker still pending ... and Ohio State never offered twelve of those top-ten players ... so the Buckeyes' hit ratio with top in-state recruits is around 75%, compared to 25% for Illinois.
