Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

This Ryan Miller can play music - but football? - Ron Morris - The State

RYAN MILLER CONTINUES to be surprised by what he receives in the mail.

Letters began arriving early this summer from the University of South Carolina football office. Then a couple every week from Illinois. One from Tennessee. Others from Charleston Southern, East Carolina and North Carolina State.

All expressed interest in having Miller, a rising senior at Lexington High School, join their respective football programs.

Trouble is, Miller never has played a down of organized football in his life.

Miller did win one heat of a 400-meter race this past spring on the Lexington High track team. He also plays trumpet in the marching band.

The episode has been a mystery to Miller and his parents, Derek and Joyce. The explanation of how Miller got to be such a sought-after commodity is a simple one, at least according to Shane Beamer, USC's recruiting coordinator. Beamer surmises that Miller's address was somehow mixed up with that of another Ryan Miller, a football recruit from Andrew Jackson Academy in Ehrhardt.

Looks like Illinois is the only Big 10 team with the Loss today..... makes 4 in a row losses and 5 out of the last 6 and I think it could be argued that Illinois had the talent advantage in 4 or 5 of those games.

Not only that, but we looked bad doing it, I saw Centers stepping on the QB feet, blown defensive backfield coverage, pat kicks spiraling towards the gatorade table..... and to make it all worse, the players faces told me they threw in the bucket somewhere around 3 minutes into the 2nd half....

All of that is really basically the direct responsibility of the Coaching staff. I've always been lenient and felt everybody should get their due chance with patience, but, he's brought in the talent, he just can't do anything with it. Funny thing, we were told that is what would happen by the Florida fans several years ago..... guess they were right.

I want TheKid as head coach. He's incredibly positive and optimistic and can't be any worse at Xs and Os.

- Ron Zook has to go as I said last year. I've never seen a team come out so flat in my life. This team is NEVER ready. NEVER. And they have absolutely no heart as they almost always pack it in when things get tough. LINK
Memo to Illini fan: We told you so....

And that's always been the rub with Zook - recruits well, but takes risks on kids with academic and character issues ... and then he can't "coach up" the kids who do stay in school and out of trouble. Which is a great recipe for an occasional "break-out" year, but a bad one for long term success.

No bowl game. What happened this year in Champaign?

Illinois mailed it in this season. That's what happens when you consistently recruit a bunch of punks, cadillacs, knuckleheads, and mental midgets. When things go well, they taunt and gloat ... and when things go badly, they whine and pout ... and quit. Class program in Champaign ... have a nice Christmas, Illini.

Nah. I honestly think they can get to 9 wins, with an outside shot at 10.

Missouri (in St. Louis) W (Mizzou loses their QB, his top 3 receivers, their top two O-linemen, and half their defense. Think GREEN.)
Illinois State W
at tOSU L
Michigan State L
Penn State W (They lose 14 starters, and we'll be at home)
at Indiana W
at Purdue W
Michigan W (they'll have yet another freshman QB who looks lost)
at Minnesota W
Northwestern W
Fresno State W
at Cincinnati L (dumbest. scheduling move. ever.)

It's just one of those seasons where everything aligns pretty well. We return every skill position player except Will Judson (Who? Exactly.) at the same time as many of our opponents are rebuilding/reloading from senior-laden teams. Plus, we'll only play one ranked opponent on the road (you guys). If our AD scheduled like any other AD in the country, I'd predict 10-2 (6-2) without batting an eyelash. Instead, Missouri, Fresno, and at Cincy will be a pretty tough run (although I think we win 2 out of those 3).

In Illiniland, I was labeled a KoolAid drinking madman for predicting 8-5 with a bowl victory in 2007 (after we had one 8 games in 4 seasons and finished 2-10 the season before), and I was pretty close. I was again called insane for predicting 7-5 this season, but this time is was by the majority who had us in a New Years Day bowl. So hopefully next August, when I toss out the 10-2, people start with the insane labels again.

Eh, it all depends on whether your team decides to play an entire season, or pack it in after Week 4 like they did this year ... and you could easily be 1-3 heading into a Penn State game that certainly will be a challenge, regardless of its being a home game. If you aren't already bowl eligible heading into the UC game (and there's a very good chance that you won't be), then enjoy another season home for the holidays.
Looks like they packed it in during week 1 ... not a good sign for the rest of the season.

By the way, insane labels start in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

Benn is over rated. Zook maybe on his last chance at Illinois. I think he gets fired.

Back when Zook was hired, I went on the Illini scout board and said that after watching him at Florida, in a couple of years Illini fan would love Zook but just a few years later they would hate him.

After being call all sorts names, told I did not know football and all sorts of things said about my parentage, its nice to see most of them come around.
