Illinois 23, Michigan State 20 (final)

Hey, do you guys play Sparty in Lansing this year? If so, I'd love it if someone contacted Tresel and he convinced the team to plant the flag after a win  I'm kiddin'...sorta. It would be funny to see a new team's flag planted in their stadium each week though. Plus, we could find more wonderful meltdowns from sportscasters like this one, heh heh

So, let me get this right... Michigan State players, mascot, and coaching staff tried to stop the flag planting? And they failed? Illinois still did it? Wow.

I have a couple of questions:
1. I thought the flag planting was banned or made illegal or the school is fined or whatever last year. Is that wrong?
2. Did MSU start the flag planting? Are they the geniouses who came up with this brilliant plan?
3. Does anyone have any pictures of the Illinois flag planting?

Lastly, I hope the Buckeyes NEVER pull that crap on a team. Classless. It says a lot for what kind of person JL Smith is.

I'm sure plenty of teams have done flag plantings in previous years, no clue who or when it started, but MSU planted their flag at ND stadium last year following their overtime win.
This year, after the Sparty meltdown in the 4th quarter against the Irish, they had those 3 players in the picture stand at the 50 yard line, anticipating ND to plant the flag in retaliation for last year, yet ND went to their band instead to celebrate without causing problems. JLS in an interview the week of the MSU/ND game this year said his guys really screwed up last year...because they planted the flag on the 35 yard line...totally missing the 50. I guess the signs of his madness were there well before the game.
This week, we saw the Illini pull the flag planting move and MSU was ready to defend the 50 yard line again, which began the fight. JLS described it in his wonderful post game interview, complete with the slap. It was hilarious

JT would never allow it. Look at how our guys simply hand the ball to the ref after scoring and so on. Discipline.

Yeah, I agree 100%. I didn't mean for that to imply that Tressel would allow it, I guess I'm just saying that I'm thankful that we have a coach with class.

On the same lines, even things like Malcolm Jenkins spiking the ball (on the half yard line) gets the scorn of Tressel. I like that.

Does anyone have a link to the post game interview?

Sorry, thought I posted it before, maybe it was in another thread. Heres JLS's strange, and yet hilarious postgame interview:

Notice how the reporter brought up the flag planting. JLS takes a sip of his Gatorade (maybe spiked with some Vodka?), then says the Illini deserved to plant the flag. He says that there was some pushing and shoving, he tried to get his guys in line...then theres an akward silence...he waits...then slaps himself and says he got hit. Then he walks offstage. Truely weird.

The only thing I can attribute this to is the MSU/ND game last week where the Spartans were causing fights again, this time on the ND sideline. Coach Weis said he got hit during the fray, and when asked about it later he said he wasn't sure who slapped/hit him. JLS had a big hissy fit about it and contacted the NCAA or something, saying the whole incident was mismanaged by officials. Perhaps it was an...attempt...at a pot shot at Weis? I'm not sure, it was definitly a little out there, he still has no one to blame buy himself for the loss :)
