If YOUR kid was offered a scholarship to a rival school....

There is no way in HELL!!!!!!! any kid of mine goes to play in sport for the meatchickens!!! Not only that, not one single penny of my hard earned money would go to that shit bucket school up north. We are a well grounded family and I would never let my kids nose be that far in the air!!!! If your kid is being recruited by that school up north then he or she has their pick of any schools in the MAC. My daughters first year of basketball was this year, and if she is good enough to be recruited by wolverweenies, then she is good enough to be recruited by U.D. or Wright State, or any mid major school. If she choose to go to that school up north she would not only kill her dad but show no respect what so ever for all the things she has been taught. It would be a total lack of respect!!!!!!!!

In contrast to many here, I wouldn't have a problem with my son attending Michigan either as a normal student or a scholarship athlete.

With regards to attending as a normal student, I want the best for my kids (when I have them) and would be very confident that he would be getting a great education at Michigan...or any other Big Ten school for that matter. Now, his not getting accepted into a decent college, through either laziness or inherent stupidity, would cause me far more sleepless nights than any concern over his donning a Michigan sweatshirt.

With regards to the latter, my only concern would be RR. I certainly would have had no qualms turning my son over to Bo or Lloyd for four years. My serious concerns about RR's character would be the catalyst for me to push him elsewhere. I would also seriously look into the possibility of whether he'd be pressured into a meaningless kinesiology major. But back to the underlying question of sending him to Michigan--as long as I respected the coach at the time and was assured that he'd be able to take full advantage of the university's academic offerings, it wouldn't even begin to be an issue with me.

So because of a football rivalry--that she may not even give a crap about--you would deprive your daughter of attending a world renowned university and consign her to a regional commuter school? Sorry, if that offends anyone, but that is a fair description of Wright State. I know that these types of threads tend to degenerate into a "who's the most fanatical buckeye" contest, but let's get serious. Is obsession over a football rivalry (especially considering that many here never even attended Ohio State in the first place) such a central theme to your existence that it would preclude you from paying for your kids college education at a great university?

I'd have no problem letting my daughter play for the wolverines and get a tremendous education. Then have her get close to the football team and leak their secrets

I guess that would all have to with what area of study my child would want to pursue. I think Michigan would have better academic programs than Kent State or Akron. If not, then we should look to bring a MAC school in the Big 10. I would have to look into that.

Yes, and it's not a hypothetical for me, since one of my kids has graduated and the other one's still in college. I've mentioned this before - my kids were told that they could attend any college they wished, but that if they went to TSUN or Ntre Ame that they wouldn't get a dime of my money for college.

They did apply to schools with similar academic reputations, but not to either of those two. I viewed that as a success.

don't you think that's kind of ridiculous? i mean, i hate michigan as much as any Ohio State fan, but i'm not so devoted that i'll actively try and sabotage my kid's education.

if my kid wanted to go to michigan because that's the school they think fits them best, then so be it. i'm not going to put my hatred of those mitten douchebags over my desire to see my kid do well. that'd be silly, and frankly, bad parenting.

Those are fairly strong statements. If you don't wish to limit your potential child's college choices, I certainly understand that and wish the best for you and any children you may have.

However, my feelings toward those two universities caused me to steer my children away from them. It was primarily due to feelings about their athletic programs; and while some may see that as petty, I didn't want my kids to become fans of those teams because it would have placed us on opposite sides on the fence. I understand that many would say that I place too much emphasis on sports in my life, but that's just the way I am.

And despite my being a Neanderthal on the topic of sports, I don't believe I sabotaged my children's education. My son has graduated from Northwestern, and my daughter is currently attending a school with a similar academic reputation. I influenced their choices with financial incentives, but I didn't outright prevent them from going to TSUN or Ntre Ame.
