However bad that game was, I think the program needed it to show how far away it was from the next transformation of the game. 96 Michigan and 98 MSU are games that they should have won and would have given the program two more national championships.
Also if we want to play the butterfly effect game, if we beat MSU in 98 that would give Saban a losing record that year. Does he go 9-2 the next year securing a job with LSU? Could OSU have prevented the beast that is today's Alabama? Yea, probably not. But who knows?
