If Tressel retired today, who would you want to replace him?

My choice to replace Tressel, in any entropic order, would be:

The Holy Trinity
Erwin Rommel
A Tyrannosaurus Rex
Ronnie James Dio
A Humboldt Squid (they are intelligent, capable of standing immense oceanic pressures and are vicious man-eating cephalopods!)

If none of them are available then the Buckeyes are screwed.

I just have a feeling that Hazell's ascencion up the coaching ladder, will coincide quite nicely with a potential future coaching search. He could very well be a hot commodity, down the line, when we're looking.

I think he's a perfect fit. A great coach, recruiter, liked by players, from the Tressel "tree". The only real thing he lacks is head coaching experience. If he comes through, I see Darrell as leader in the clubhouse when the job comes up. It could be awhile, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him step another stone, first.

IMHO if he can turn Kent into a top MAC team, he will have proven himself.

I've given this topic a great deal of consideration and I am finally able to answer the question. When Tressel retires, I want:

prowling the sidelines.

Runs a clean program

Has a superb defense, which is always a constant theme with osu

Has a top running game and seems to focus on that. Being able to run in the big 10 is key and he can do that.

Just seems like he would fit the mold.

What is his connection to OSU, Ohio football, understanding of the importance football has in Ohio and most importantly The Game?

I threw his name out earlier....and a good point was brought up which is that he is about the same age as JT. I don't necessarily believe you have to have been born in Ohio to understand the tradition and importance of the game or the history of the program. Which I will concede are important. But I think any good historian of football will understand those concerns and want to use them to motivate and would probably be totally juiced to become part of tOSU tradition and history. I just don't want a guy looking to step into the NFL.
