53-year-old musher becomes oldest Iditarod champ

A 53-year-old former champion has won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to become the oldest winner of Alaska's grueling test of endurance.
Mitch Seavey and 10 dogs crossed the Nome finish line to cheering crowds at 10:39 p.m. Alaska time Tuesday.

Seavey's victory came after a dueling sprint against Aliy Zirkle, last year's runner-up, along the frozen, wind-whipped Bering Sea coast toward Nome. Zirkle crossed the finish line 24 minutes after her rival, who greeted her after a while.

Also trailing by a dozen or so miles was four-time champion Jeff King, who was followed by a cluster of contenders, including Seavey's son, Dallas Seavey. The younger Seavey at age 25 last year became the youngest Iditarod winner ever, beating Zirkle to the finish line by one hour.
Mitch Seavey first won the Iditarod in 2004. Before his Tuesday night win, King had been the oldest Iditarod champion, winning his fourth race at age 50 in 2006.

Congrats to Mitch Seavey on becoming the oldest Iditarod winner, 1 year after his son Dallas became the youngest winner. Ally Zirkle finished second in each of those races.

It's also nice to win some vCash on this race, which I've lost money on the last couple of years. Hi, Jaxbuck.

As an (Air Force) Alaskan for the last two years its really cool to see that other people follow the Idarod outside of Alaska. To the locals here it is like a NASCAR event. They know the names of the mushers and teams, as well as their dog breeds and ages. The natives also talk about the checkpoints constantly throughout the day and there is a ton of help from the local pilots on carrying medical supplies, dogs, and whatever else is needed to/from checkpoints.

Naw... we are just degenerate gamblers

This year's race (2014):

Dallas Seavey wins second Iditarod

Dallas Seavey won his second Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race early Tuesday, taking the lead just hours before his finish.

Seavey, 27, was the first musher under the famed burled arch finish line in Nome. He ran a blistering pace the last 77 miles to catch the two mushers in front of him, four-time champion Jeff King and Aliy Zirkle, who finished in second several minutes after Seavey.

2015 Iditarod show goes on despite lack of snow

If there is one day when mushers in the Iditarod sled dog race don't have to worry about trail conditions, it should be Saturday during the ceremonial start.

A lack of snow south of the Alaska Range created treacherous trail conditions, forcing race officials to move the start of the race to Monday in Fairbanks. A stalled jet stream pushed Arctic air and snow into the Midwest and the East Coast, but kept Alaska fairly warm and dry this winter.

Despite Alaska's largest city receiving only about a third of its normal winter snowfall, Anchorage is still staging the traditional ceremonial start to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. City crews overnight delivered up to 350 dump truck loads of snow and spread it out over city blocks so the show can go on. The festivities started Saturday morning in very un-Iditarod like conditions, almost 40 degrees and a light rain fell.

A new vBet has been created for this year's Itidarod, which has started already. Betting is open until noon Eastern time tomorrow - the race takes about 9 days to complete, but we have always managed to pay out the vBets before the NCAA tourney starts.

The odds are mine.

Dallas Seavey wins third Iditarod sled dog race in 4 years
Iditaroff.jpg

March 16: Dallas Seavey speaks after being the first musher to reach the Koyuk, Alaska, checkpoint during the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. He went on to win the race.

Dallas Seavey has won his third Iditarod in the last four years, beating his father to the finish line in Nome early Wednesday after racing 1,000 miles across Alaska.

Seavey came in under the city's famous burled arch finish line to wild applause from fans lining the street, some who poured out of the doors of bars lining Front Street.

An exhausted Seavey, who also won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 2012 and 2014, petted and hugged his dogs as he crossed the finish line, later saying, "It takes a whole team to get us here."

He said it was a very difficult trail, but "loved every second of it."

"Wins are a result of doing what we love," Seavey said, adding that he tried to keep the race fun. He said he and his father, Mitch Seavey, who won titles in 2013 and 2004, encouraged each other along the way.

Dallas Seavey was confident before the race, telling The Associated Press he had the dog team that was capable of defending his title.

He increasingly put distance between himself and the rest of the field during the latter part of the race. He held a 25-mile advantage early Tuesday -- a far cry from how he won the race last year. He was running third in the 2014 Iditarod when a freak snowstorm blew the leaders out of the race, and Seavey didn't know he had won the race until a cameraman broke the news to him.

Seavey was presented $70,000 and the keys to a new pickup for winning the race. The winner's purse increased this year, and the top prize was $19,600 more than what he pocketed for winning last year's race.

Snowmachiner Attacks Two Teams, Kills one Dog

http://www.adn.com/article/20160312...jured-after-snowmachine-attack-iditarod-trail
Two Rivers musher Aliy Zirkle and Denali Park’s Jeff King reported a snowmachiner repeatedly attempted to harm their dog teams as they traveled to the Yukon River checkpoint of Nulato early Saturday morning.

King’s team was struck, according to a press release from the Iditarod Trail Committee, resulting in the death of 3-year-old Nash and non-life threatening injuries to two others: 2-year-old Banjo and 3-year-old Crosby. A dog in Zirkle’s team also received a non-life threatening injury.

The snowmachiner said he was "Blacked Out" drunk when he went after the two teams. I hope he was because he made continued/multiple passes.

Still shouldn't excuse his behavior/actions.
