Identity theft - Credit Card Fraud Thread

In a similar vein most retailers in the United States will have to install EMV also known as chip and pin by October 2015 which should reduce fraud a bit. That will not affect on line fraud or identity theft from hacked accounts but EMV coupled with encryption and tokenization will slow down fraud quite a bit from an in-store purchase perspective.....

So does anyone use Lifelock or a similar service to protect from identity theft? We just got a notice from Cap One that we were getting new cards issued to us in light of the most recent hackings.

I was eligible for a free subscription with ProtectMyID.com (Experian) after my name was identified in the window of the Target POS hack last year, so you may want to check through your card issuers and see if you have any outstanding promotional offers through any of them. The promotion I got in under was through Capital One, and the normal $9.95/mo subscription fee for ProtectMyID was completely waived for one year from my enrollment date.

With your Capital One account you also have the option to enroll in their free Credit Tracker service provided through TransUnion. Another free option is to create an account with Mint.com and get your deposit, withdrawal, and major purchase alerts directly via Intuit. Mint also provides you access to a credit scoring/monitoring service with Equifax.

Between ProtectMyID, Capital One, and Mint, I can get credit monitoring alerts out of two bureaus and the credit scores and reports from all three for free.

Some how a thief in Canada got my credit card number tried to use it at a Home Depot. . It got caught by my credit card company and didn't cost me anything. Got a new card with a "chip" on it now. About every 2 years this is happening now.

I have one card and put everything on it to make bookkeeping easier. I don't know if that makes a difference........
My wife and I have talked about this or going back to writing checks. We only have 2. I have a Visa card specifically for business traveling and expenses...a few cigars and fine drinks somehow find there way on there though....

CapOne did that for me when Target got hit. They actually have decent fraud department. I have the Credit Tracker through them that alerts me if anything happens in one of the big 3 credit reporting services.

I don't use one of those services, I am just OCD about checking all of my accounts at least once a week, but mostly every day. Takes about 10 minutes to go through them all to see if there is anything strange.

I am with you on that, I go through them constantly just to make sure everything is good, especially when I travel to make sure that I am not getting hit.

You can open account that is only used for auto-pays and then just keep the card at home for emergencies.

I setup an account with personalcapital.com today. Very cool, free service (with Web and iPhone/Android apps). Similar to Mint, but geared more towards long term financial planning without the emphasis on month-to-month budgeting. Unlike Mint, Personal Capital's aggregate transaction feed shows pending charges and pre-auths, which appears to be very handy as a one-stop fraud alert tool.

I'm not really sure the value of Lifelock. I applied for a car loan and talked with a couple of different major banks and I got no notification from Lifelock. I also received a letter from a bank that I never applied to thanking me for an application. No Lifelock notifications. They claim that not everyone participates with them, so they can't get 100% of everything. Seriously, these were all major banks. Time to end that subscription.
