Idea to Redout Penn State

Sea of Scarlet

Redout Creator
Hi, I'm a student at OSU and am trying to help drum-up some support for this idea. It already has a decent following on The Ohio State University's Facebook site, but we are looking to spread the word a little further, to obtain more widespread support.

Here's our tagline:
Last year, Penn State got 20,000 students to wear white. We can do better. Show your support for the Buckeyes and help turn the Shoe into a Sea of Scarlet.

"That's probably the best student section I've ever seen," stated Herbstreit of the more than 20,000 Penn State students who stepped up for the enthusiastic "Whiteout" of the Buckeyes.

We need to prove to the world that Penn State does NOT have the best fans in the Big Ten, and we need to do it in a big way.

The Ohio State University has a legitimate shot at being the national champions this year, but now without support from the fans!!! Show some buckeye pride and invite your friends!

Let me know what you think (you may not be able to reach the link, as you need an ohio state e-mail to log in to that site, sorry!!)

Here's a suggestion...how about actually going to a game and see for yourself that it's already a "sea of scarlet" every game. Go pimp your facebook page somewhere else...

Chill Mililani....

I don't know how familiar you are with Facebook, but it is HUGE on campuses. The student section is not a sea of scarlet. It is a sea of scarlet, white, black, gray. The guy is trying to get people pumped up a little - I don't see the cause of your animosity to the idea. I think that it is a good idea to use this as a way to communicate a possible red-out. I, too, happen to think the PSU crowd looked great and would like to see us do it. It's not as if we are ripping off a PSU original idea - many schools do it because it looks good.

In addition, Facebook and Myspace are being used to get out music, political campaigns, and many other ideas and arts. This is as important or moreso for many college kids to check on an everyday basis in comparison with email. Heck, I have uploaded vids of Buckeye plays on myspace and get emails from people all over the country.... including people who are younger and could possibly turn into Buckeye fans after watching a TGII vid.

1. Have you seen the rest of the stadium? By the way, I did try to go the the linked facebook page first before I replied, but facebook says I have to login in first...wrong answer.

2. If you think my post had animosity in it, you haven't been here much.

3. Hate to break it to you, but Penn State's main color is blue, not white, so if you want to copy Penn State "whiteout" idea we'd have to do a "greyout" instead. They wanted to do the whiteout idea because it was a night game and they wanted fans to wear white instead of the normal blue because of the higher visibility.

4. Could possibly over-glamorize a site any more? Don't you sit there and BS me about the value to society of facebook and myspace. Both my college-graduate kids have myspace pages, and they're nothing but chit-chat pages. By the way, where do you get videos of Buckeye plays? Of course, it wouldn't be from here, now would it?

Couple of things:
First, white at a night game is far more impressive than Scarlet could be at night, during the day, whenever...
Second, Penn State DOES have the best student section in the Big 10, or probably anywhere...I'm an OSU Alum and we have great fans, but Block O has never really impressed me...I've been to a ton of great games including the 2002 NC season, and not once did I ever think, "Wow those guys in Block O sure are loud"

Dear god no.

Schools like Penn State have to do a white out to drum up emotion for their pathetic 4 win team. I hope to god we don't stoop to that level for a regular Big Ten opponent who isn't even a rival.

First of all, Block-O is a sea of scarlet, if you look at replay clips it is noticeably more scarlet than the rest of the crowd. I sat there two years ago and I'd say only 1 out of 20 people were wearing something other than scarlet.

Second, the reason Block-O isn't as impressive as Penn State's student section is that there are only 1800 people sitting in Block-O. The rest of the students are spread out around the stadium (with a large group, way larger than Block-O, in the NW corner among other places). I'm sure if they put all the students in the same section of the stadium it would be a "better" student section.

However, unlike other schools, the non student fans get just as loud as the students at Ohio Stadium. Nothing makes me happier than a 30 year old guy getting just as crazy as I am at the games. And that is the norm at Ohio Stadium, not the exception. And that is what makes Ohio State, Ohio Stadium, and Ohio fans the best- the entire Stadium is the student section (except the club seats :chompy:).

Nothing needs to change. Like 27 said, we don't need stupid gimmicks to get pumped for games, especially revenge games.

Hahaha Man people get pissy easy :-/.

The kid was trying to get get something going to make the game experience a little better... so be it.

On that, why copy something that has already been done? If we really want to out-due them come up with something original, not something copied. Now if you really want to help in crowd noise as students demand that more students get tickets and get rid of the people who are there just to be seen and get pissed off because you stand up and cheer.

Good luck with your cause, I would love to see OSU as a loud as possible for that game.

Agree. Come up with something original.

I agree...how about right after the 3rd quarter ends, play the "Electric Slide" over the speakers and everyone in the stands does the dance.

Its electric, boogey woogey woogey woogey....

Nobody else does anything like that right?

Everyone will be jumping around like they are drunk on whiskey!!
