I need some urgent help

That's a pain in the buns
So I'm pretty sure I have H1N1. I haven't been feeling the greatest the past few days, but I just woke up shivering like mad, pounding headache, fever, etc. (Im lucky I can type right now I'm shivering so bad)

I'm on my parents health insurance, Aultcare....does Urgent Care take that? I don't have a regular doctor down here, no student health insurance (since my parents still cover me), so I'm not sure if I can go to the student health center. And I'd rather avoid the hospital. But I need to see a Doctor this morning.

That sucks dude. FWIW, all of the H1N1 cases that I have heard of went to the doctor and were basically told to get the hell out and deal with it. Unless you have certain conditions (asthma, really old, really young, etc.) they will probably just send you home. You should still go to the doctor of course because the effects from these things can change quickly, but don't be surprised if they just send you home.

Dude, if you feel that bad just go to the friggin' doctor, you life ain't worth worrying about the insurance issues, most insurance companies have emergency services that will cover out of area, but you'll probably have a higher co-pay.

Also make sure that Tami Flu is covered by your prescription coverage. It can be a little costly to pay for if your insurance doesnt cover it.

Interesting... Maybe it's a Michigan thing. I work for the big health insurer in Michigan and all the rage is to try and cut drug costs because our rates are so high. Tamiflu is very expensive, in Michigan it was around $15 per day supply in 4Q08. A typical script is for 5.7 days which means over $85 for that person. Limiting access to that drug saves a lot of money for the insurer and thus the members.

Although I get the feeling from talking to people around here that it's actually the doctor's decision without any pressure from the insurer. But maybe the doctors are just doing a really good job of selling the "you really don't need it" line so they meet their incentive goals.

Side note: This leads to an interesting debate which probably belongs in the healthcare thread. It's just a small example, but do we as a society want to pay a little extra per year in health care costs so that we are more comfortable in these situations? They won't have a material affect on the stats that people use to compare how healthcare is working in different countries but we will be more comfortable.
