Agreed on Divine Fits. Been listening to that one almost exclusively for the last week. I was afraid it would be self-indulgent side project garbage, but actually turned out pretty well.

A roundup of some new/recent indie albums:

Wavves - Afraid of Heights Excellent. It's a bit like Weezer before they sucked and and Green Day before they sucked had a baby and this album was that baby. Their last album was great too - this one has many of the rougher edges removed by comparison.

The Men - New Moon Pretty good. Three albums in a row and I can't think of a bad song between them. Problem is, I can't think of a memorable one between them either, which is a bit of shame.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mosquito Sorry, I can't get past the pointless gospel choir in the lead single and that atrocious cover art. This is the first YYYs release I won't be buying.

Phoenix - Bankrupt! Comes out next week, but the full album is streaming for free and I'm listening to it on iTunes now. Their last two albums are among my all-time favorites. This one is a lot more synth-y than those, and not in a way that I immediately like. They've earned the benefit of the doubt for me though, so I'll be buying it and giving it every chance. It's funny... back in 2006 Phoenix were accused of trying to sound like early Strokes records. Nowadays you could probably say The Strokes are trying to sound like Phoenix. At the very least this new one by Phoenix sounds like the record that Strokes have been trying to make over the last several tries.

The Strokes - Comedown Machine I felt cheated by their last album - heard a couple of promising songs and but the album as a whole was crap. I'm not falling for it again, especially since the lead single this time isn't very good. I wish they had decided after their first two albums to pull an AC/DC and just make the same damn thing every couple of years. I don't think many people would have faulted them for it.

Local Natives - Hummingbird A dense, beautiful album. Sonically it resides somewhere between The National and Grizzly Bear for me. A couple great songs, and enough promise and intrigue for me to continue to listen to unlock the parts that I don't get yet.

The Besnard Lakes - Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO That album title... umm... OK? As for the songs - it's more of the same My-Bloody-Valentine-meets-the-Beach-Boys stuff that I loved on their last two albums. The songs are all the long slow-burn type as usual too, but they don't quite pay off with big epic hooks at the end like they did before. I'll probably still buy this one, but probably only on CD and not on vinyl.

And yes, I know that MBV, the genuine article, finally have a new album of their own. I ignored updating my iPods for the longest time though and I haven't gotten around to checking that one out. I've heard it's good, but then again it could be overrated by people who were starved to hear something, anything from them over the years.

Yeah Yeah Yeah's is on par with "It's Blitz" but not as good as the first couple. The cover art sucks but the music is worth buying if you are a fan of "It's Blitz".

I like the Strokes new album. However, I also liked "Angles" even more. If you didn't like much of "Angles", I wouldn't expect you to like "Comedown Machine".

I will also be getting The Phoenix's album next week. Loved the last one.

I have MBV. Only heard it twice and I'm not a fan as of now. It took me years to like "Loveless", so maybe it grows on me.

Another Indie album worth mentioning is "Foxygen" - "We are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic". Very derivative of 1960's era Rolling Stones, but a fun listen.

Foxygen is a really good band, especially if you're into the psychedelic sound.

Wavves album might end up being my favorite for 2013 - which is packed full of great releases. I saw Wavves when they were in Columbus, and a band called FIDLAR opened for them and were insanely good. I got their self-titled album (which released in January), and it did not disappoint. They're worth checking out if you're into a more punk-ish sound.

A few more days of listening, and it's a real grower. The penultimate track, Columbia... one of the more powerful songs I've heard in a while. If you listen to that song (really listen) and don't get a little choked up, then you don't have a soul. The whole sequence at the end of the album is strong, actually, starting with Woolly Mammoth, a track that sounds like Grizzly Bear melodies over Gnarls Barkley instrumentals. It sounds weird to say that, but it works really well in this instance. I'm definitely buying this one.

Going to see them live in September as they open for The National at Red Rocks. 1st time to see The National, and I am very amped up for it.

The National put on a good show. I'd love to see them at Red Rocks. They are coming back thru Cincinnati this summer, but it's going to be a festival show, and I don't like festivals. I'll definitely be seeing them play again the next time they do a theater show in the region.

I wish I had the shirt you're talking about. I'm too damn fat to squeeze myself into an American Apparel t-shirt though so I had to make the image into an avatar instead.

I'm excited for their new album and film.

It has been a great year so far, and next week is huge - Daft Punk and The National. I've been doing my best to avoid listening to streams - so far have just heard a couple songs from each in passing on XMU.

Trouble Will Find Me by The National is the most amazing album I have heard in some time. Perhaps it's just that they are my favorite band or that some of the songs just really resonate with me right now. I highly recommend this album.
