My mother works for a veterinary hospital, and they've already seen a few dogs come in with gunshot wounds. One of those dogs was a Jack Russell Terrorist. (Yeah, those really look like deer! :roll1:) Folks, please be careful out there!

Coyote season is not closed during gun season. I wonder if some of these dogs were mistook for coyotes. The Jack Russell obviously is not a good example but if some of these dogs were curr dogs, wild or mangy I could see why one would take the shot.

Not trying to instigate anything.....just trying to add reason to the discussion.

I got a nice sized 8 point buck this morning at 8:02 am. They are still in the rut...he was right on a doe's tail.

Buffalo County...This picture supports the theory that it is the big buck capital of the US!!! Wow what a monster!!! This buck was shot just outside of Arcadia, on opening morning of 2006 gun season. The story was that they were setting up to make a drive right away opening morning. The guy who shot it was one of the standers. He said he had just got to his spot he was going to stand off for the drive and heard something behind him. Here was this GIANT with a doe coming right for him heading into the drive. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Welcome to Wisconsin Gun Season.

The buck had 15 scorable points and a 29 1/2" inside spread.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

My uncle took a very large and nearly perfect 10 point. My brother got a weird 13 point. It had a third beam (brow tine) that came back up between the two main beams. I got a nice 8 point.

For the anti-hunting arguments. I can see where they come from, but I can't agree. The deer crop damage has always been bad where we hunt. The landowner got 10 nuisance permits this summer. This year there was one field out of which he got 0 ears of corn. The deer ate every single ear. That field alone is somewhere in the $7,000 range for loss. So, if you would be willing to take that kind of pay cut, then we'll talk (keep in mind that's 1 field, not even close to the whole farm).

As unbelieveable as it sounds I would have let that grand old man go on his merry way.

I was always a meat rather than trophy hunter and had a soft spot for the monsters who had obviously been around the block more than a few times.

I am back from my trip to the land of bucks. Saw hundreds of deer. No big bucks so we let them all walk. We still have meat left over from last year. Deer chili this weekend!

On the dog issue, some dogs run deer and some hunters will shoot those dogs. I do not agree and there is no knowing the circumstances.

Taos. The archery of today provides a quick, clean kill, in the proper hands.

Congratulations to all of you on your success.

i always envied southern hunters, you didnt have to freeze your ass off. ive hunted maine and pa and both places cant say that i can remember not freezing. i also think snow pretty much everytime.

I have not killed a deer in a decade and as I mentioned above I have had ample opportunities. I would if the right situation presented itself. I may help our club take some does to get the herd in balance.

I live in LA and the first day of bow season was 90+ degrees and humid. The freaking mosquitos would carry you away and you have to wear knee high snake boots. Our deer are small compared to the midwest.

For me it is an excuse to get together with my old friends in Ohio or get away from the noise of proper, civil society as they refer to it.

The hunt is not the prime reason but it is part of the ritual if you will.

Well, we took another 5 deer on Saturday. That makes 12 so far off of a square mile of farm. The owner also took 10 deer a few months ago on nuisance permits. The crazy thing is that we haven't even come close to putting a dent in the population there.

Animal populations work themselves out without human interference. There is no reason what so ever to hunt in this day and age.

My brother hunts bear, elk, deer, and other stuff. He skins, packs, freezes, and eats everything he takes, and he never takes prey UNLESS there's room for it in his freezer.

You go to Kroger and buy yours off the shelf.

And the moral distinction would be?
