HS Swim Team - any experience?

just got the swim schedule last night, practice starts on the 27th, son will miss at least the first week because football will be in the playoffs - maybe longer if they win. Getting ready to see what the team does this year, 2nd best swimmer on the team last year isn't swimming this season because the assistant coach "said something very insensitive to him" - still dont know what, but seems soft to me. I'll make sure to post results quickly as I know BB73 will be anxiously waiting :slappy:

Kid dropped 13 seconds on the 200 freestyle last night! and he also dropped 1 second on his 50m - had a few people ask last night if he had been working in the off season, i laughed because he plays Football, Baseball and Swim - there is no off season for him, he swims as a workout for recovery, but its just for endurance when he's not in swim season. super proud of this fella

PT has told me that swimming is best exercise for the body. Works most of the muscles, and the least punishment on the body. Was a basketball player, coach told me to play tennis (at net) to work on my footwork. And daughter swam, didn't emphasize winning the race, but instead posting a personal best. When got two PBs in a meet, she got to pick dinner destination, like iamburutis above. Went from Happy Meals, to Hometown Buffet, to white table cloth restaurant. Fortunately, it becomes harder to cut time as you get faster. Oh, it's done, but just harder. And that's when they're older, and their choices become more expensive. FWIW, she cut her times, even when she swam in college....

Son (10) and Daughter (8) had meets last weekend at Miami U. Both a little intimidated in swimming at a "BIG" college pool but both did great.
I still don't know if they truly understand the "why" of the technique their being taught right now (they are so little) and some kids are clearly faster but they're both having fun and doing better than I ever expected.

Going to continue to hit it 3x per week and they have meets in Jan and Feb coming up.

Oxford town, Oxford town, everyone's going to Oxford town. Even though I matriculated there, don't even know where the pool is. But assume that it's a 'long course', (50 yards instead of 25 yards). Or meters, I forget. Had the same thing in basketball. The court was the same, but the space was a lot more. On the plus side, you had more room to pitch your pop up....PS, times on the long course are slower, why? Because when you do the longer races, 200 for example, you can only push off the wall half of the times, which leads to longer times. PSS, suggest you get certified as a stroke and turn official. (You're right in front of the action). I did that, and still remember daughter doing backstroke, turning in front of me, and giving me a big grin....

Being the athletic department photographer has allowed me to be on the field for baseball and football, and the deck for swim, its awesome! My son makes goofy faces at me all of the time during swim

Get it completely. Hardest thing, was to DQ my kid for a violation. Probably would have let it slide against another swimmer, but the violation gives them something to make better. Anyway, there were some bad feelings at home. One is supposed to judge everyone the same, and being a tad tougher on my daughter was probably a moral violation (on me). Your gig is better....a S&T judge is supposed to spent an equal amount of time on the four lanes you're assigned to judge, but of course, I spent more simply watching my daughter.
