HS Swim Team - any experience?

Wood, a fyi. 'that's the way it started', but when your kid (or any kid), starts posting some good times in whatever stroke, then the bug kicks in. Your child will get used to getting the medal/ribbon/lollipop/whatever, when they get awarded a first, and the fire to get better kicks in (for the parents as well). Ours started in summer swim, and she enjoyed standing on podium, so went 'year-round' ( and yeah, like you mentioned, a commitment is required. Dollars, plus # of days in the pool per week. Did all that, but the best coaches were still 25 miles away, and cut into study time. Anyway, swimming possibly best exercise one can get, and there are 'senior' swims after college for middle-agers, etc. PS, recollect that the pee-wee swimmers had the most fanatic parents. It gets better when swimmers age up, and talent/training take over. PSS, we used incentives, mostly her picking where we went to dinner if she posted two PBs (personal bests) in a meet. Net is that she raced against herself, striving to improve her times. Anyway, it's all good, and enjoy for you too will become an empty nester, and miss those crazy days in the sun.

NJ, you're spot on. Heard the same thing...the boys golf is very cut-throat. We had a kid that played to a +2 at our golf club, and didn't even get a sniff from the local university. Not only gotta be good, but play and win local and regional meets. The field skinnies down significantly when the girls tee it up. If you can break 80, you can get a schollie (tune into a university near you). Got a kick seeing the promos of Caitlyn Clark teeing it up with Annika and Nelly Korda. Showed some shots, but didn't see the final scores. Doubt that CC was competitive with one of the greatest ever (Annika) and the best now (Nelly). Anyway, our kid was exposed to all the sports, including dance, and singing, and flute. Little by little, her talents and tastes showed out, and she did what she enjoyed (and was good at). She got selected for the ODPs (Olympic Development Program) for water polo, and even got a scholarship offer to small college, but swam at a U that didn't have polo, but had a better biology program.

That's awesome! Thanks for the info, much appreciated

My son is 5'8" and started swim at 155 - down to 152 now - he leaves swim and eats like a horse - like 7 meatballs for dinner last night! - after football he would typically eat a sandwich and a protein shake.

As far as practice, they are practicing 1.5hs M-T - then 1.5hours Saturday morning during Christmas break they have two a days (with an awkward 1 hour in between)

I swam my freshman year of HS. I’ve never been hungrier in my life. I ate and burned more calories during that season that I think I did for the remainder of my HS career.

My kids and a few teammates used to head to the all-you-can-eat wings nights at Quaker Steak and Lube during the season. I am pretty sure they are the reason Quaker Steak discontinued it.
