HS Swim Team - any experience?

Wood, a fyi. 'that's the way it started', but when your kid (or any kid), starts posting some good times in whatever stroke, then the bug kicks in. Your child will get used to getting the medal/ribbon/lollipop/whatever, when they get awarded a first, and the fire to get better kicks in (for the parents as well). Ours started in summer swim, and she enjoyed standing on podium, so went 'year-round' ( and yeah, like you mentioned, a commitment is required. Dollars, plus # of days in the pool per week. Did all that, but the best coaches were still 25 miles away, and cut into study time. Anyway, swimming possibly best exercise one can get, and there are 'senior' swims after college for middle-agers, etc. PS, recollect that the pee-wee swimmers had the most fanatic parents. It gets better when swimmers age up, and talent/training take over. PSS, we used incentives, mostly her picking where we went to dinner if she posted two PBs (personal bests) in a meet. Net is that she raced against herself, striving to improve her times. Anyway, it's all good, and enjoy for you too will become an empty nester, and miss those crazy days in the sun.

NJ, you're spot on. Heard the same thing...the boys golf is very cut-throat. We had a kid that played to a +2 at our golf club, and didn't even get a sniff from the local university. Not only gotta be good, but play and win local and regional meets. The field skinnies down significantly when the girls tee it up. If you can break 80, you can get a schollie (tune into a university near you). Got a kick seeing the promos of Caitlyn Clark teeing it up with Annika and Nelly Korda. Showed some shots, but didn't see the final scores. Doubt that CC was competitive with one of the greatest ever (Annika) and the best now (Nelly). Anyway, our kid was exposed to all the sports, including dance, and singing, and flute. Little by little, her talents and tastes showed out, and she did what she enjoyed (and was good at). She got selected for the ODPs (Olympic Development Program) for water polo, and even got a scholarship offer to small college, but swam at a U that didn't have polo, but had a better biology program.

That's awesome! Thanks for the info, much appreciated

My son is 5'8" and started swim at 155 - down to 152 now - he leaves swim and eats like a horse - like 7 meatballs for dinner last night! - after football he would typically eat a sandwich and a protein shake.

As far as practice, they are practicing 1.5hs M-T - then 1.5hours Saturday morning during Christmas break they have two a days (with an awkward 1 hour in between)

I swam my freshman year of HS. I’ve never been hungrier in my life. I ate and burned more calories during that season that I think I did for the remainder of my HS career.

My kids and a few teammates used to head to the all-you-can-eat wings nights at Quaker Steak and Lube during the season. I am pretty sure they are the reason Quaker Steak discontinued it.

my son's first meet was this weekend - what an experience - reminded me of my HS wrestling days (we were at the pool for 4 hours) -I feel like this was a "big" meet, but I'm not sure, there were I THINK 12 schools represented. I don't remember his times, and the tracking app has not been updated yet, but

50m freestyle - 12th out of 26 swimmers
100m freestyle - 17th out of 28 swimmers
200m freestyle relay - his team got 7th out of 8

he looked good from what I can tell - his biggest weakness right now is his entry - i think if he cleans that up, he'll be just fine.

Next meet is tomorrow evening.

his turns were actually pretty clean looking from what i could see (comparing him to the other kids that were going really fast) - he also needs to practice the breathing, he was breathing on every swing of his left arm, once he learns that, he'll be much faster I assume

My kids were not FR sprinters, but their friends were and were good. I am pretty sure they would take 3 breaths total on the 50 FR. These kids had been swimming for years and were state podium placers, so it takes some time to get to that point. The focus is on improving every meet.

Get there early to set up the pop-up in best position. Being a numbers wonk, I would chart the stroke times, by event, by meet. You can literally see the drop in times. Used to show kid her progress as well. if he's swimming the 50 (a sprint), why not the 100 as well. Still a sprint. PS, the 200 FR relay hard, as unless you're a big school, to get four very good swimmers in class. FYI, get a job as timer. You're right at pool's edge, and can see the action much better than from the stands. Plus the host team gives you snacks free !

I'm actually the team photographer, so I have a media pass to be on the deck for that purpose - great views of reactions, and I dont have to "work", LOL

Yeah, right. Just make sure you get pics of everyone! PS, have great one of daughter coming into the edge, doing the butter, with big grin on her face. Post the pics on your web site, give it out, and let folks know it's a buck a pic....and get your wheel barrow out to carry money to bank...enjoy

I shoot all of the kids, i've gotten some good shots already. I share them in the team app for free - i did the same thing during freshman and jv football (and next year when i'll be shooting Varsity) - I know as a parent you just want good sports pictures of your kids - I've done the photography for money thing in the past, but i stopped enjoying the hobby b/c it became a job.
