Not trying to derail the thread, but reading the comments on those tweets is insane. The number of people believing that this year's severe weather is the result of "manipulation" or some super secret gov't plan to weaponize the weather is incredible. Increased Co2 levels or global warming ( whether man made or not) having an effect on weather patterns is beyond their comprehension, but a man made "weather weapon" is completely plausible and must be the reason, although they can't you WHY the gov't would be doing it. You can't tell them that 1974, 2011 and 2013 were actually worse (so far). Wait till hurricane season gets in full swing, which is being forecast as one of the worst in years. WTF happened to education and common sense in this country?

OK. Rant over. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

A lot of it is because stupid people are bored and seeing things that they've not paid attention to previously.

There's always been stupid people, regardless of the education levels in this country.

There's always been tornados. Crazy enough, to have severe weather outbreaks like this, you need to have the right ingredients for it. Same with Hurricane season - just because the water is hot doesn't mean anything if the upper level winds are not right.

At some point, the idiots will move on.

Man I've typed like 9 responses to this, but I can't respond without making it super political. I like how this year was predicted to be worse than usual due to La Nina, but the particular contingent of morons thinks everything is a conspiracy now.

Anyways, I got the top tier subscription to Radar Omega. It's worth it for any of you weather nerds who like to sit and stare at radars for hours at a time!

I don't want to make this a political thread either, I just want to state my observations from having spent 31 of my 55 years here in Arizona. We've had really hot summers and others not quite so hot. We've had rainy years and dry years. What we haven't had, at least as I can remember are those one or two weeks a year where the temperature gets below freezing at night or those few days that even though it doesn't stick, it snows for an hour or so. I can't even remember the last time I've seen my porch thermometer below freezing. On the flip side we had two recent summers where we set records for the number of days below 100 in July and August and also a record last year for the number of consecutive days over 110 degrees. I also remember living in Alaska for ten years. When I first got there I was told that it didn't snow as much as it used to nor did it get as cold. While I was there I experienced more than a few record lows and two seasons of record snowfall. About ten years ago they had a winter where it turned October and stayed October until April. I don't know if the climate is changing but it sure does throw a lot of curve balls at you. Also, 31 years isn't even a blink of the eye. When it comes to the weather no one really knows what to expect.

same with hurricanes.
in my over 40 years of living on the Louisiana coast, I've seen years where we don't get so much as a scare.
then I've seen spurts where every damn cloud in the Atlantic basin turns into a hurricane dead set on hitting Terrebonne Bay.

The summer of 1994 I decided to take a break from Alaska and spend the summer down here to work on my tan. In July that year we went over a week of the high being between 125-130 degrees. I hadn't ever seen anything like that before nor have I seen it after. It was just a hot SOB.

Colorado River Valley between Bullhead City AZ and Needles CA

we hit 119° a few days in a row last year here in West Texas.
hit 114° six or seven straight in 2017.

i have no desire to feel 125°

side note:
while 119° is brutally hot (no sugarcoating that), some of the scorchers the swamp provides are just oppressive.
98° with heat indexes around 115° is just misery.
