How to spot a bandwagon Buckeye fan?

I don't see "bandwagon fans" as "casual fans." To me, one can be a loyal, longstanding Ohio State fan yet not post on message boards, go to every game, know the weekly two-deep roster or give a rat's ass about recruiting.

Bandwagon fans tend to overcompensate for their newness by trying to be Uberfan. They jump on board when the team is winning; they buy way too much clothing (generally the more loud, garish items at that); they obsess over every little team and recruiting detail--while the program is on top. In its darker incarnation, it takes the form of abusive, bullying behavior on gameday towards opposing fans. "Hey look at me everybody: Aren't I the biggest Buckeye fan out here today."

Then, when the program struggles for a couple of years, it's "fire the coach" fire the university president" "get rid of the board of trustees." If the program doesn't start winning again soon, they just lose interest or start rooting for Michigan or whoever the flavor of the month happens to be.

To me, a simple definition of a bandwagon fan is this ...

Fellow turns up to work wearing any, obviously new, team gear within a day or so of a big win.

You say to them, with good reason, "I never knew you were a fan of ... insert team name here ..."

They typically try to claim their longstanding claim as a long term fan of said team.

Yet, they cannot name one other game of significance, nor player nor coach from those earlier days, involving their obviously newly acquired affiliation.

That is a bandwagon fan - no matter the team in question.

A bandwagon fan is simply someone who roots for a team only when that team is doing well and/or because everyone else is rooting for that team. He has little to no genuine affection for the team.

A casual fan roots for his team regardless of the team's record, but isn't as wrapped up in his team to the degree like most of us here on BP are. He will watch his team whenever its on TV and may even attend an occasional game if he can, but won't fork out $100 for GamePlan or get DirecTV just to be able to watch a couple games he'd otherwise miss, and doesn't plan his entire weekend around watching his team.

Well, I think we lost a lot of bandwagoneers. When you lose 2 national championships in one year.. They kinda fall off. The real Buckeye fans wore their OSU ties to work, the day after those NC games. Even in hostile territory (GATOR COUNTRY) like myself.

Sure I get pissed off at them sometimes, but bandwagon? No way. I got a degree from teh Ohio State University. I love me some nuts. :wink2:

I am thinking about rooting for OU next week.

On one hand, I would LOVE to see tOSU play for the NC, and a Sooner win would do everything right for the Scarlet and Grey.

OTOH, my feelings against OU are well-known, and if anybody remembers my posts from last week's Texas Tech game...

I will make a decision by Sunday evening.
