My first thought was "this is just now going to court?!" but it looks it was just last summer when it happened. I could have sworn it was longer than that.

Internet era attention span I guess.

The thing that really annoyed me about the whole episode (besides the fact that Ravi is clearly a douche bag) is that Clementi had already complained to the RA that his roommate & a friend were spying on him and filming him during sex.

If you knew someone was taping your sex life (and were bothered by it), why in the hell would you continue to have sex in the same location knowing it was likely to be recorded?

So is this a crime because he was using a webcam to spy on him or is it because the guy offed himself? Ten years, are you kidding me? I agree that the dude that was doing the spying is a total douche, it was morally wrong and he should face some kind of consequence but a 10 year prison sentence because the guy was gay is a complete and total farce. I'm thinking a fine and being forced to live off campus would be an apropiate punishment.

Wow. Really? Have you been living under a rock? How do you not know this is a hate crime? And how have you missed the focus in this country on stopping bullying?

Let's take a look at what this moron is accused of:

Invasion of Privacy
Bias Intimidation
Attempted Invasion of Privacy
Tampering With Physical Evidence
Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution
Witness Tampering

Bias Intimidation is the hate crime part of this, as defined by the FBI HERE.

And so we're clear, the prosecution is likely going to look for maximum penalties in this case, served consecutively, not concurrently. This guy could face the majority of the rest of his life behind bars because he thought it would be funny to harass his roommate, a guy who had done nothing to him - other than being gay, which Ravi, apparently, found to be a big deal.

You're right, it was a hate crime, Ravi was wrong to do what he did, he should be punished but I think making him spend the majority of the rest of his life behind bars for this is a farce. It's really sad that the guy decided to take his own life over this. It's beyond my comprehension why he'd let some bigoted idiot get under his skin to the point that he jumped off of a bridge. I guess some people are more fragile than others. It still seems excessively harsh. Child rapist get off with less time.

I think what you're getting at is the (sometimes farcical) disparity in crime and punishment in our courts. Yes, that's a problem and yes, that should get fixed, but that doesn't mean Ravi is getting a bad sentence for this.

Some people are more fragile than others. Some people have a really hard time just laughing stuff like this off. That should be a clue to guys like Ravi that you don't go screwing with people just because you can... but it's not.

It would be great if everyone was tough and had thick skin and could handle something like this with aplomb. Clearly they can't. And that's not the victim's fault.

Yes, you're right, I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it. I should probably have more empathy for the victim in this case and not the perp.

Fuck "hate" crimes, and fuck those who created them. So Ravi gave a gay guy a hard time. If he gave a straight guy a hard time and the straight guy offed himself as a result, he wouldn't be facing near the sentence he faces now. Total bullshit...

Maybe you're just remembering the pranks you pulled on roommates/house mates in college. I pulled pranks on my roommates a lot, and they got me right back. All that was just college shenanigans, and I think most folks pull that kind of crap when they're in college. You weren't trying to be horrible or harassing or whatever, and I would bet that this Ravi guy was (most likely) feeling the same way - he just wanted to screw with his roommate. This was different, though. And right or wrong, the fact that the guy committed suicide afterward makes it a bigger deal.

Um.... wrong. He would be facing ten years less, that's all. Witness tampering, Evasion, attempted destruction of evidence - these are all big deals. The hate crime aspect of it only adds ten years. The bulk of his sentence - if he's found guilty - will come from his other crimes, not the hate crime.

And congratulations on being born white, hetero and all that. Congrats on being young, too, although that won't last. If you think you can't be the victim of a hate crime you'd better think again, and if that day ever happens, are you just going to laugh it off and beg the prosecutors to leave your harasser alone? Wake up.

Another made-up crime for the sake of the outspoken gay community (see "homophobia")?
I really hate to break it to you Mili, but every single crime out there is "made-up."

Which is why shooting and killing you is also a "made up " crime.

I'm guilty of a crime if I shot you randomly for fun.

I'm not guilty of a crime if I shot you randomly for fun - but I was insane at the time.

I'm guilty of a crime if I shot you after I broke into your house.

I'm not guilty of a crime if I shot you after you broke into my house.

I'm guilty of a crime if I shot you after you broke into my house - but you then tried to leave and had your back to me when I fired.

I'm not guilty of a crime if I shot you after you broke into my house - but you then tried to leave and had your back to me - but I thought you were going for a gun I had out in the room you were entering.

I'm subject to the death penalty if I shot you - and you died - and you happened to be a police officer.

I'm not subject to the death penalty if I shot you - and you died - and you happened to be a plumber.

We "make up" this [Mark May] all the time. They call it legislation. So while you certainly may criticize the rationale and purpose justifying that particular statute's enactment (which is largely just what society deems as correct at any given point in time), it is no different than any other criminal law that is "made up" by the legislature and enacted into the criminal code.

The amount of stupidity in this statement boggles the mind.

Wow, you just continue to stupify. I'm 54, dipshit, so I'm not young. And although I am indeed White and straight, great job in automatically assuming that I'm White (I'm sure all Blacks and Hispanics look at homosexuality with the highest regard). And speaking of "wake up", before you shoot you mouth off about Whites never being victims of bias, bigotry, or dscrimination, try living in Hawaii or and Asian country for a while...you'll be in for a rude awakening.
