How do you define the "Best Team"?

With a college playoff finally coming to fruition lots of folks are celebrating that we can finally identify the "best team" in the country. I would love to know how folks define that term.

Is it the group of players who performed the best during the course of an entire season? The team that is performing the best at the end of the season? The team you would bet your life on in a one game playoff against any other team in the country? Is it by definition whoever wins the new four team playoff?
 
If college football teams played 10,000+ game season, each team playing every other FBS team 100 times, it should tell us definitively who the best overall team was. I would not want this team crowned the champion. I would want them crowned as the #1 seed, with an X (X>2 for me) team playoff to determine the champion.

Part of the beauty of sports to me personally is that this theoretical #1 seed only wins the tournament, say, 70% of the time. Excitement is maximized by the number of teams you can invite to said tournament. As long as the tournament doesn't get so big for the given sport that the number dips below maybe 30% or something like that, it's preferable.

That depends on what is meant by "reasonable", which is where the min% comes in to play to check against it.

No. No, no, no.

A playoff does not determine "the best team." A playoff determines a champion. That is all.

That's debated in other sports, also. It's pretty understood that playoffs don't always determine the "best" team, although it's the fairest, most objective method.

By definition, IMO, the best team is the one who would most likely beat any opponent it would face at any time. From Oh8ch's above list, I'd say the one that "performed the best during the course of an entire season".
