How Do You Defend the Spread Offense?

part of good defense is a good offense... and by that I mean, if Todd doesn't throw that interfception in the end zone, we get a field goal, and we're down four with 8 or 9 minutes to go. We get the ball back, we're driving for the winning touchdown. So if he doesn't throw the last pick then we are putting ourselves in position to win the game.

The only other thing I kept thinking during the WHOLE game is we just didn't have one single highlight film play by the defense --- no awesome sack, pick, fumble recovery, etc. We kinda looked like Illinois' scout team defense out there, and Juice had a black jersey on.

I don't know much about all the schemes you guys are discussing, but I just kept looking for the big, momentum-swinging play by the D that never came.

Still bummed, but it's scUM week, and I live in tsun, and if you had given me a Sophie's choice of beat Illinois OR beat scUM?? I'd have taken a victory over Meatchicken.

So let's win this week, let's beat ASU or whoever in the Rose Bowl, and we'll finish top 6 or so and that's okay for this year.

In our case yesterday vs Illinois, you have to have a man dedicated to keying in on the playmakers. You have to commit Laurinaitis to stopping Mendenhall, have someone else keeping Juice Williams in check, and make sure the receivers are all hit as soon as they come off of the line of scrimmage.

They ran the same play all night. Both Williams and Mendenhall have got to be hit on every single play, regardless of which of them gets the ball.

I am not a defensive guru, but I have watched my high school team defend the Spread OPTION offense the same way for seven years...and you defend the Spread Option the same way you defend the triple option. You play assignment football...but its the MLB's and OLB's that play the assignments on the RB and QB...and you hit them both on every single play...the D-linemen play two gap responsibilities...I know high school is not Major D1 college football...but you must assign somebody to the qb and rb at all times. take away the run of the spread option offense and it becomes a pedestrian spread offense like the one Northwestern runs and OSU has dominated in the past...allow the RB and QB to run wild and, well, we've seen the end result twice in the last 11 months. :(

earle bruce had similar comments after the game, he also placed a lot of blame on JL as he was playing the game outside in, not inside out, this resulted in 3, 4 five yard gains all day...

Defending the Spread Offense?!?!?

I'm not sure if there is a thread on this already. I did a search and I didn't see anything devoted to this topic. I want to know what everyone thinks about the spread offense that everyone is saying is "the new offense of college football." Particularly, how to defend it. We seem to struggle against it as seen last week against Illinois and also in the NC game. Is it that we just don't see it enough in the Big10 that we are not as prepared for it as some of the teams in other conferences? It reminds me of the Nebraska teams of the 90's that ran the option (wishbone). Seemed like teams just weren't used to playing against that type of offense so it was hard to prepare for. So I think having some teams like Illinois in running that type of offense year in and year out could really help us in the long run.

Anyway, just interested in getting everyone's opinions. Especially interested in how defenses should scheme and defend against it.

.....and I give a fuck because I am interested in it. I'm not a player or a coach so I don't have to worry about "looking ahead" to future games. So what if we end up playing another spread team for our bowl game? And I'm pretty sure we'll end up seeing the spread again soon so I'd like to know what people around here think.........

The point was Its *ich*gan week. We aren't talking about losing to Illinois, Florida or who were playing in a Bowl game this week.

Ask Grad for clarification on the policy if you need it.

This would be a conversation for this week had Antonio Bass not been injured. Llllloyd was being heavily criticized for always going after QBs like Navarre, Henne, and *allet. So, he went out, got the best athlete at TSUN since Woodson, and called hi* a quarterback.

Guy could run a 4.4 and throw the ball 60-70 yards while flatfooted. Next Antoine Randle-El.

2 years later, he suffered a critical injury, and is out. Football future is in serious doubt.

If he had been healthy, this would easily be a discussion. Instead, *ichigan has a traditional drop back quarterback, with a traditional drop back quarterback as their backup. In an event in which *ichigan lines up with 5 wide, I'd say 3-3-5 would be solid enough. Send an outside linebacker on a blitz, while you are at it.

I'm confused. So your saying I'm only permitted to comment or start threads about the scUM game during this week? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Had I know there was already a thread about defending the spread offense I would have just commented there. This is just silly. This is a Buckeye forum and there shouldn't be any policy that says I can't ask questions that aren't related to this weeks up coming game. If I want to see what everyone thinks about the scUM game I'll go to that thread. Anyway....the mods can go ahead and delete this thread if they want. I found what I was looking for thanks to kartaron. Go Bucks!!!!!

Has our experience with the Juice, who I think is better then White, taught us the keys to win? Will Tressel and Heacock come up with the correct defensive strategy to defeat their flavor of the spread?

How do you think we play White, who do we use for a spy/s?



What are the defensive alignments which stop the WVU offense?



Or, does our defense and offense just totally dominate and there is no need to discuss it?

I've actually thought about this before. Our defense probably matches up better vs. a team like LSU, and I am saying that based on our defensive performances vs. spread offensive teams like Ill. this year and Fla. in last yrs. bowl game. I would certainly hope that we have learned our lesson with the spread offense. The thing that makes me feel good about playing UWV is that while their offense is pretty good, their defense is terrible..so I have no concern with us puting up points...unlike we did vs. the gators.

I think the key to stopping white is for our D-Line to play like it did vs. TSUN. UWV players do not concern me.
