The poster who said most people recognize five titles sounded fair-minded to me. I just get peeved at all these schools trying to retroactively claim national championships. You guys are not the only ones.

I think our programs and teams are pretty even. You guys ended a 34-year title drought in 2002. We're hoping to end a 35-year drought this year. Good luck on September 10th.

Retroactively? Did you read Mili's post or are you intent on being an ass?

Hey -- Born a blow hard -- you don't sound fair minded to me. No-one round here is "retroactively" claiming anything. All OSU NC titles -- the 5 free and clear, plus the 2 from established bodies -- were declared FOR Ohio State, not grabbed by the university after the fact. Your implication is insulting, I am demanding pistols at dawn.

As for the programs being even, certainly not in their NC history -- even by the most unskilled of caveman math. Your school claims three National titles. Perhaps it is that born a blow hard can't count higher?
UT has one consensus NC in 1963, one in 1969 on your 100th anniversary and a third UPI poll NC (of equal validity to the 2 other OSU National Titles) in 1970. Which resulted from your positioning in the UPI polls prior to your final bowl game.

Which UT lost.

To Notre Dame.

But that still leaves Ohio State with 5 consensus NC and 2 Poll NC to their credit, total 7 -- difference 4 versus UT's historical tally.

Good luck in your next sentence.

Scoooter -- You are quite right about borna being a bad example of a UT fan. If I were a UT alum viewing this thread I'd be dinging his ass right now to let him know that his inflammatory BS reflects poorly on their institution.

And we have been lucky to have as frequent visitors excellent ambassadors for Longhorn football.

To be fair, I can understand how different people choose to value different measures of what makes a national championship. I know Buckeyes who only recognize 5, although most recognize 7, and some even recognize a few more. This isn't an Ohio State phenomenon, it's a byproduct of a nebulous (at best) system of naming a champ that college football has suffered since day one.

I mean, look at two years ago. Who was champ? USC right? Everything you read now talks about them being the national champs, when it was in fact shared. Were I an LSU fan, I'd probably be pretty bitter about that lack of recognition. But it's a question of who is a media darling, who isn't, and how people measure championships for themselves.

If Purdue "wins" the Big Ten this year without playing either Ohio State or Michigan, they will "hold" a Big Ten Championship -- but how many people are going to value it as one?

This is all pretty subjective stuff.

Ultimately, this thread is an exercise in poor presentation and questionable tact leading to it coming off like a flame or troll.

One of the well-established and well-liked UT fans could have asked the same question in a different way, and the conversation would have been friendly and productive.

Speaking of which, I hope those same Longhorns will stick around and continue to chat with us now and again after our game is over, just as guys from Miami, Texas Tech, Washington State, NC State, etc. have done in the past.

So 5, 7, 9, 12 -- whatever. We're 0-0 right now. Texas is 0-0 right now. Texas has some of the feel and all of the aspirations of our 2002 team, the biggest difference being we sort of came out of nowhere to shock the country, and once again they're ranked very high. I think this is a big year for Mack Brown, who I have (and many others have) likened to John Cooper on more than one occassion. The man can recruit, the man can win the easy games, but the pressure situations -- can he win regularly? This year is full of opportunities for exposure on that front. OSU, Oklahoma, the BigXII championship should they get that far, the national championship should they get that far. I know *nothing* about Mack's job stability there, but I know that when expectations are through the roof, and you constantly fall short, that coaches don't hold their jobs forever (see again: John Cooper). Big year for Texas. Big year for us. Miami, Oklahoma and Michigan as well.

Someone (with huge apologies to good friends/posters like methomps and wstripes) has to knock USC back down a few pegs. I don't have any problem giving them all the respect and credit in the world, and say that right now, it's them and then everyone else.

Hey now, they've won 2 B12 south titles in Mack's 6 years at UT. Thats important, just ask them.
Just to be completely accurate, they have 2 B12 South titles in Mack's 7 seasons as head coach. He started there in 1998. They lost Big-12 title games in 1999 (Nebraska) and 2001 (Colorado).

And, just in case you haven't picked it up yet in your short visit to our site, and let's be honest, if you're a Texas fan, you know all about "short" :wink2: , that is our equivalent of pointing out that you got punked big time, dude!
