Home Repairs/HoneyDo List/Advice & Tips/etc.

Well muffler, the Wifey and I just closed on our house Thursday. We started painting on Friday. So far we've painted the kitchen and bedroom in two coats using the speedwall Paint by Glidden. Great cost saver, and it's turned out looking really nice. Thank you very much for the recommendation!

Excellent!

Next up painting the Living room and upstairs/downstairs hallways. Oh and removing wallpaper from one of the bathrooms and one of the bedrooms. Who uses that crap anymore? :shake:

Get one of those steamers for the wallpaper. No question. It will save you a ton of time even though the job is still going to suck balls.

Friend of mine just took off 4 layers of wallpaper, he used Downey and sprayed it on. Said it worked well.

All detergents/soaps/solvents/etc will have a beneficial effect; however, the heat from the steam adds an element that really helps in getting that stubborn shit off. The glue most likely is a waterborne type that should be susceptible to high temperature water.

Yup, we borrowed my parents steamer. She took of a top boarder in the bathroom in about 20 minutes, glue and all. However, one of the bedrooms has it on the lower half of all 4 walls in the bedroom and will be more challenging. It's quicker with the steamer but its still a pain in the ass.

So I got a nice big SHOCK today from one of the outlets. I was removing a shelf for a microwave (we're getting above the range microwave here soon) and the shelf has an outlet in the back of it. So I have to disconnect the outlet to take out the shelf. I turn off the 2 breakers labeled "Kitchen" and I go to put the stinking outlet back together and bam, shocked. It's such a crazy and not a good feeling. I was shaking for about 15 minutes after it happened. Time to relabel the breakers in the box

Undoubtedly. I've thought about beating the ever-loving-hell out of people in stores who are looking at wallpaper. Hate that shit.

*Which makes it a wonderful weapon in the future if I ever want to piss someone else off.

This is my to do list just for a few rooms...and it's only the beginning. And it keeps getting longer and longer

Next up replace about a dozen receptacles because they're either ivory or not working. Can't wait to get shocked again

When I moved into my house seven years ago, I relabeled the breakers (print was too small/I don't trust people) using a radio. I left it turned on, and plugged in, and knew I had the right breaker when it stopped working. Good luck with your extensive list, hope you don't get bitten again.

Wife and I moved into my grandparents' home in 2005 and promptly repainted every single room. We've also repainted two of the bedrooms since (one of them twice!) as we had to shuffle rooms as our daughters have come along.

My experience: Don't try to save money at your do-it-yourself superstore. Find a local Sherwin-Williams and buy quality paint.

I would agree with your paint assessment. I have had the same experience utilizing top quality paint. On top of that the Home Improvement stores aren't really that much cheaper per gallon and it usually requires two coats of their paint as opposed to one of Sherwin Williams.
My experience has been that SW paint basically sucks. It probably doesn't suck all that bad, but for the price it may as well be Braylon Edwards (on the field or in the park after dark).
Most comparisons I've seen agree that results are similar for Behr and Valspar, and both either outperform SW flat out, or the results are so similar there's no reason to pay the extra for SW. I'm always surprised when I hear people praising SW paint, I've never had a good experience with it.

Valspar is a whore.
