Home Repairs/HoneyDo List/Advice & Tips/etc.

When I woke up this morning, I never thought I would spend the day the way I have.

So the wife and I got to talking this morning about getting organized and cleaning out our closets(we each have our own closet). The conversation ends up leading to us looking at elfa closets on the container store website. We decide this is the route we want to go, so we head to the store at 10am. We spent an hour with the "designer" picking out the features, shelves and what not for our closet. The total comes to 1200 out the door, uninstalled. We wanted to take everything with us right then, however I guess they have to pack it up and prepare your order so it takes a bit. Fine we still have to go home and clean out our closets now. The wife and I combined to fill 6 trash bags full of clothes to drop off at Salvation Army. Once the clothes were all out of the closets I had to take the current shelves, rack and screws out of the wall. Whoever installed the current set-up did a real number--so many fucking holes. I decide if we are spending this kind of money on closets it better look nice and I come to the conclusion to paint the closets. A trip to Benjamin Moore and I got the paint. Spackle all the holes and 2 coats of paint in both closets brings me to where I am now. I did pick up our "closets" from the container store while I waited for the 1st coat to dry. It is 615pm, 8 hours later and I have not even started to assemble the new "closets". I just cracked open a beer, hopefully these closets are not too hard to put together.

That's a heck of a Sunday. Jeez.

Tearing off all of our trim, little by little. And the previous owners used 2" nails on baseboards/window & door trim/etc that is about 1/2"-5/8" thick. They also put nails spaced every 2-3". :shake: It's been a nightmare

The retards who expanded the kitchen in my house in Springfield did something very similar.

When I had to redo the wall they fucked up, I realized they had driven 3 inch nails through 5/8" trim into a plaster wall that wasn't set correctly so the plaster had bonded to the nails. So every nail I took out brought a piece of the wall with it.

That's a lot worse. Holy crap that's crazy. I remember you saying you were repairing the plastered walls, but that, WOW!

Yep.

And it's not like they had sealed the windows properly anyway, so that wall was coming down but that was annoying to say the least. Since the boards split when I was taking them off I had to completely re-do the trim.

It was a MESS.

I so can't wait until that piece of shit sells errr I mean historical one of a kind first time home buyer paradise!!!

So how did it go?

I got the wife's closet "done" around 10pm. I found that the store had forgotten to give me 6 brackets so I could not install the top shelf for my or her closet. I didnt start on mine last night. I woke up around 730 and knocked it out before running to the container store to pick up the missing brackets. So both closets are complete, we just have to move all our clothes back into them.

Next, she mentioned she wants to clean out our storage units. We'll see if that gets done today.

For anyone else that could use this item, this seller is a good place to pick up quality refurbished gear, as well as discounted brads, nails, etc. Note, I think they have a pretty stiff restocking policy.

Just received mine and it is in pristine condition. You'll see a lot of similar reviews below in the slickdeals thread.

Anyone know how to repair the hot water faucet on a tub? The faucet turns but is obviously stripped inside as it does not engage to turn the water on. I took the top off and have disassembled most of it, but I really don't know or can't tell what is wrong with it?

More likely is that the handle has stripped off the splines on the handle shaft, or that the hot water line is plugged. The handles do not strip off inside. you will have to turn the hot water off and disassemble the faucet to clear the line or determine if there is another problem.
You might want to have replacement seals, o rings and or gaskets for that particular faucet on hand before you begin.

Not really a repair or DIY question, but I figured it would fit in here as well as in a new thread.

I just moved down to Florida a few weeks ago and finally found a permanent living situation. Being that I only brought what I could fit in my car I need to buy some furniture like a bed, nightstand, and dresser. Went to the IKEA here and like several items and figured I'd see if any of you had any experience with IKEA furniture, if you like it, etc. I've also never used a platform bed before, but it doesn't seem like it should be that different from a typical mattress and box spring setup in terms of comfort. Is it? Also, I'm trying to decide between a foam-based mattress, or a typical inner-spring mattress. Any advice/tips/wisdom/reviews would be helpful. Thanks!

I assume you are asking about the $2k entirely memory foam mattresses? I have no experience with those.

On the off chance that you are asking about pillow top mattresses, or someone else could benefit from this:

Always buy a mattress without a pillow top that fits your level of support. You can always add egg crate padding underneath the sheets to provide as much cushion as you want, especially if your partner likes less.

The first thing to wear out is the pillow top, forcing you to replace the whole thing instead of just buying some new egg crate padding.

Also, for anyone in Columbus, check out Mack Mattress outlet. We were in the market for a second queen. We were going to spend around 800-950 at various retailers to get a quality bed in our budget. Everything below that was not supportive or comfortable enough.

At that location, we bought a name brand king sized mattress, two box springs and a frame for about 450. We had already ruled out a king sized brand given the prices elsewhere.

Now I will await the inevitable reply about that being unrelated to your question
