 With "easy wins" painted beneath the top layer.

It's not a bad countertop, it's just mediocre. If it's more of a bandaid than an alternative, I'll just wait and do it right.

Is it the same basic feedback for the thin layered counter "topper" options?

When I was a kid I sawed apart my parents' old countertop and converted it to a workbench. That thing withstood years of metal sculpting, etc. The only thing stronger I've seen was my grandpa's: an old bowling alley.

Just giving some recycling tips. :) Obviously it depends on your material.

http://www.granitetransformations.com/

I have seen a couple kitchens that used their granite-overlay products for countertops, looked good and installed quickly, not sure about cost but certainly less than full granite replacement.

I had a friend get a quote from Granite Transformations and it ended up being more than I paid to get completely new 3cm granite installed.

Similar experience here. We looked at a "granite laminate" place here in Columbus and ended up getting the real thing(full thickness),\ with more edging options, for about the same price from Konkus marble and granite.

You make the good point that there are local options for granite counters that don't break the bank. I was very happy with L&E Stone for our kitchen countertops and bathroom vanities.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It isn't awful (just the standard beige) and there are many things higher on the list that would be more beneficial (finishing/furnishing the basement) or visually appealing (the bathrooms are pretty mediocre), so we'll just save up for down the road and do it the right way.

I'm a novice when it comes to heating.

I have a Bryant Plus 80 High Efficiency Gas Furnace which I believe is hooked up to a heat pump.

It has been about 30 degrees outside, but the house has only been heating up to 62-63 degrees with it set to 75.

When I switched it to emergency heat, the furnace lit the flames again and warmed up the house nicely.

Is this normal? Do I need to have the heat pump serviced? I've read on a few threads that heat pumps don't work very well when it gets down to 30, but it seemed to be struggling before that.

The house is about 12-15 years old, and so are the major items (water heater, furnace, etc).

You're in luck today. :)

I had several appt's with different HVAC people this morning. According to them, the heat pump in a dual-fuel system should be fine down to 30-35 at which point the gas furnace kicks in. So it does seem to me like the heat pump might be underperforming.

Also, this may not be true for what you have, but according to the guy from TrueTemp, the thermostat for a dual-fuel system can be adjusted so that it switches from the heat pump to the gas furnace at a different temperature. So if there isn't anything wrong with the heat pump and it's just old (well, not old....MY furnace is old, yours just isn't new anymore), you could set it it change over from electric to gas at 45 instead of 35. Wouldn't be as efficient, but it would at least be warmer.

And I'm basing this on not much information, so I could be totally wrong, too. But you know that already.

It seemed to be a touch cooler when it was 40-45 out too, so it's obviously not doing great.

We've got a pretty old thermostat, the kind with analog settings, but it doesn't seem to automatically switch over.

We're actually planning to replace it anyway, but it's worth having the guy tell me in ten minutes if I'm an idiot and I just need to do something simple, like switch this knob or just put in the new thermostat.

Garbage disposal finally died (it's an old Badger 1).

Amazon came through big again, the well reviewed Waste King Legend 8000 (1 HP) unit is $206 after tax at Sears. Only $116 shipped at Amazon. Save $90 & give almost $10 bucks to Clarity, Win-Win! (...win)

I'm actually excited for it to arrive and install it. :shake:

p.s. The heat pump was out of free-on. We're going to see how long it lasts before running low again.
