Higher Ed. firings and resignations

Lots of people dunking on this but its rhe elephant in the room and there will be different approaches at first. I don't have a problem with this as long as they understand this will need to be constantly reevaluated and not the usual "let's realize some inevitable future" and then not adjust for it when it doesn't come to pass.

I had to sign up for free access to see this, but it was worth the effort. I have to give credit to Florida University board member Paul Renner for seeing through Ono's charade. Don't know if this was due to Renner's own ability to read people, or just a knee-jerk reaction to Ono's earlier activities regarding DEI.

It also looks like Ono showing his ass to the board may have alienated some academic leaders out there who might have otherwise helped him find a new spot at another university. You hate to see it.

From the article:

"Ono is not without supporters. But his compromises, which he seemed to stack up by the hour, made him a bit of a heel among some of his higher-ed peers."

“He’s not a strong leader,” a senior administrator who has worked closely with Ono said. “He wanted to do all the fun stuff, but not the hard stuff. He hated conflict because he wanted to be popular and liked. Conflict could result in someone not liking him, and he couldn’t stand that.”

So fucking spot on. He had no business running a university ....

Several axioms out there. "if you're not pissing people off, you're not working hard enough"; "you cannot make everyone happy"; "gotta do what's best in the big picture". Probably more, but it's early here. Anyway, after 28 years in k-12 education, have seen the most successful Superintendents utilize their board to chum up votes for his/her programs. In other words, make certain that you've got Board support before you put your ass out there. Too easy to look foolish if one doesn't do their research, and garner support. If you want to zig, and the board wants to zag, you might find yourself outside and looking in. Had more than one superintendent tell me, 'went to bed with a 4-1 Board. Woke up with a 2-3 Board, and all I did was go to sleep". This bird didn't even get out of the starting gate, so somebody got to the Board beforehand. Just make sure you've got a solid buy-out clause, and that you've got a 5-0 Board going in. Anything else means that you need to keep your resume current.
