Headlines You Don't See Every Day (outside of Florida)

Presume you’re replying to the Lawsuits thread? While I too find it hard to believe that such severe injuries can result from a water slide wedgie, she’s not suing for only $50,000. The article state “more than” that amount. Many states, including Ohio and presumably Florida, do not allow personal injury complaints to state an amount requested in excess of a statutory limit.

That does not limit the injuried party from requesting or getting a far greater amount at trial. The purpose of the pleading amount limit was an attempt to stop the PI attorneys from seeking headlines for increasingly ridiculous demands.

Huh. I would have sworn it was posted here, too! Thanks for the info on the amount — I was not aware of that.

I'd never send a DNA sample to one of these companies but I'm pretty sure my SIL did when doing a family tree. She doesn't like me much (the feeling is mutual) so maybe she didn't list me as a relative. This sort of hack was bound to happen, sooner or later.

not nearly the same degree.. but reminded me of a story/life lesson
I was coaching 13-14 yr old baseball... I had another coach's son on the team and he'd always yell at me for never playing his son in the infield...
so we're doing batting practice and I put the kid at 2nd base...
Batter hits a line drive and it's headed right to the kid... I still see it in ultra slow motion
Kid's reaction is slow.. glove not coming up fast enuf..
Ball hits him flush in the face.. shatters all the teeth in the front... I was devastated.. screaming at myself for letting myself get bullied into doing something I should not have done... decades later I'm still pissed...

What did the kid’s dad say/do after that?

Dad said nothing to me when he came to the field.. but my sense was he knew he screwed up too..
I wanted to scream "that's why I played him in right field" but the situation was bad.. was time to STFU...
kid probably lost 7 teeth.. and he was a damn good kid... tall kid.. never complained before

My oldest was a HS varsity baseball coach in NC.. and had a related issue
Got word from AD that couple parents demanded equal playing time for all players...
My son responded that he wanted a document in writing absolving him of any liability
as he told the AD "we're facing D1 talent every game, some of these kids should never be in a batters box with them..
if we had 50 kids try out and I kept best 18 OK.. but my roster includes everyone that signed up"
He never got the document and he gave up the coaching job at end of season
