Family In South Africa Discovers Venomous Snake Slithering Through Their Christmas Tree

A family in South Africa had to call in a snake catcher to safely remove a boomslang snake that they found hiding in their Christmas tree after they brought the seasonal item home

One family's Christmas festivities took a nightmarish turn when they discovered the tree they bought was also home to a venomous snake.

Rob and Marcela Wild were in for a surprise when they found a boomslang — one of South Africa's most venomous snakes — in their Christmas tree, CNN reports. The couple, who lives in the Western Cape, had to call in a professional to wrangle the animal safely.

"The cats were peering into the tree, and my wife said, 'There's probably a mouse in there somewhere,' " Rob told CNN. But he and Marcela soon found the mystery guest staying in their tree was much more deadly than a little rodent.

"I didn't know what it was at the time, but then I Googled what snakes are in our area, and it came up immediately as a boomslang," Rob told the outlet. "I thought, 'Holy Moses, this is the king of all poisonous snakes.' "

Snake catcher Gerrie Heyns recovered the animal from the family's tree.

He then held it behind the neck and placed it in a "snake tube." As it was getting dark, Heyns took the reptile home where he temporarily housed it in a snake enclosure before releasing it back into the wild on Sunday.

My grandfather had a farm outside Logan. Lots of Copperheads. He would just nonchalantly distract them with one hand, grab their tail with the other hand, and then snap them like a bullwhip. The head would come right off. When I lived in Durban, where the boomslang snakes are really plentiful, I saw people in villages harvesting sugar cane just go after them with a stick and that was that.
