Head-coaching comings and goings

LitlBuck

Kevin Warren is an ass
I thought I would start this thread so that people could post what they hear about comings and goings of head basketball coaches, and make comments as appropriate, so that a different thread is not started for every new hiring. I suppose you could also assume that if a HC is hired for another program that program will need a new HC. I obtained this information from here Please keep rumors to a minimum or the moderators will probably give you a spanking:) or maybe more.

Anthony Grant (VCU HC) hired at Alabama
Tony Bennett (Washington State HC) hired at Virginia
Shaka Smart (Florida assistant) hired at VCU
Johnny C. (Memphis HC) hired at Kentucky
Mark Fox (Nevada) hired at Georgia
Pet Chambers (Villanova asst) hired at Boston U
Sean Miller (Xavier) hired at Arizona
Josh Pastner (Memphis Asst) hired by Memphis
Kevin Bone (Portland State) hired by WSU

This will be my last update to this stepchild:biggrin2: post due to Spring football:)

The only other HC vacancy is now the Xavier job unless big Jim decides to step down at UConn.

I left off this list a few mid-major or smaller comings and goings.

There still are some big-time openings at USC, Memphis and WSU.

Virginia Commonwealth University is set to hire Florida assistant coach Shaka Smart as its new basketball coach, said two sources close to the situation.

Smart, 32, succeeds Anthony Grant, who left to become Alabama's coach.

A press conference to introduce Smart has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Siegel Center. It is open to the public.

Smart was an assistant this past season at Florida, a role Grant also held before taking the reins at VCU.

Before joining Billy Donovan's staff with the Gators, Smart spent two years as an assistant at Clemson and three years as an assistant at Akron. He also has served as the director of basketball operations at Dayton and as an assistant at California University of Pennsylvania.

Smart played at Kenyon College in Ohio, where he is the school's career assists leader (542). -- Tim Pearrell

Arizona to have a coach hired soon

Arizona to have a coach hired soon

March 31st, 2009 @ 9:09pm by Tyler Bassett/Sports 620 KTAR
The University of Arizona may have a coach hired within the next 24-48 hours for the vacant men's basketball coaching position.

The school has narrowed down their choices and talked to four candidates, sources have told Sports 620 KTAR's Mark Asher.

A deal is believed to be agreed upon in principle but nothing has been signed.

The names are Gonzaga's Mark Few, Louisville's Rick Pitino, Oklahoma's Jeff Capel, and USC's Tim Floyd.

Few and Pitino have been rumored as possible candidates for weeks. Both have expressed that their energy goes into the program they are currently with.

Capel's name has just recently surfaced and was also linked to the Virginia job before they hired Washington State's Tony Bennett.

Floyd is somewhat of a surprise name and also is being mentioned as a possibility for the Memphis job that became open on Tuesday.

Report: USC coach Tim Floyd to Arizona - ESPN

Tim Floyd will be named basketball coach at Arizona, Mark Asher of Sports 620 KTAR, ESPN's radio affiliate in Phoenix, is reporting according to multiple sources.

Floyd is meeting tonight with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood to work out the final details of the deal and an announcement is expected Thursday, according to sources.

Floyd, 55, has spent the last four seasons at USC with an 85-50 record. He led the Trojans to three NCAA tournament appearances -- including the Sweet 16 in 2007.

Floyd previously coached in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls in 1999-2002 and the New Orleans Hornets in 2004.

He was also the head coach at Iowa State, New Orleans and Idaho.

No offense, LitlBuck, but not many people would truly regard Washington State as a "big-time" job. Lots of mid-major jobs (Creighton, most other MVC, Utah, Davidson, maybe even College of Charleston) are seriously better than Wazzou, regardless of the success Tony Bennett had there. Bennett is a strong rising star IMO.

With Sean Miller turning down Arizona, does this mean Xavier has turned a corner? That's the type of job a Xavier coach usually leaves for. Gillen left, Prosser left and Matta as well of course. Each has expanded on the success of their predecessors.

Of course, that's not to say that Miller wouldn't one leave for something even better than the job he just turned down - say at his alma mater or at one the handful of traditional elite programs if the offer comes. It looks like for the time being though that Xavier may have transformed their program from a stepping stone to a bit of a destination job.

From the BN free board, Jeff Rapp wrote that he knew a person very close to Miller and this was posted before today but he stated that this person told him the only job Miller would probably leave for would be a position in the ACC or maybe the UConn job.
