HC Ryan Day (B1G Coach of Year, B1G Champion, National Champion)

This is BS. But he doesn’t do himself any favors with some of the playcalling. This CFP he needs to have his foot on the neck of everyone they face. No more of this 3-4 TE sets in the red zone. I don’t think anyone would think for a second that Urban takes JJ and Carnell off the field in favor of Christian in the RZ. Especially with the most accurate QB in CFB

I think it speaks to the talent machine he has built (off of where he picked up from Urban) imo.

No one on earth is going to give him credit for his coaching when he's using the absurd level and depth of talent he's using to win with.

It's the Phil Jackson/Kirk Ferentz syndrome. Day won't get credit for his coaching unless he wins multiple titles and then it will probably be in retrospect.

Not a coach alive that wouldn't like to have that problem.

You can’t seriously believe that. No way did Day just give the reins to Hartline fully this year. He has and will have his hand in the play calling as long as he’s here. The IU game is case in point of classic Day, but so was The Game

I seriously believe Hartline is the one calling the plays yes.

Of course he has influence on the game plan. There literally isn't a head coach on the planet who doesn't on offense OR defense. And please bring up the play card in his hand and ignore the fact that he has a defensive one too.....

Do you seriously think he's calling the defense too? Or is it only because you don't see Hartline using the walkie talkie like Patricia does?

What I’ve heard is that Hartline now runs the offensive game planning meetings, where they decide which plays they are going to run and the strategy for the game. Prior to last year Day always ran these meetings and it was a huge time suck that he shouldn’t do as a HC. This season Day still attends most of the meetings, is heavily involved in the planning and has the final sign off on the game plan. To me it’s less about the in game play calling and more about the offensive strategy decided during the week. That’s when they decide on the pool of red zone plays that they will use. That’s when it gets decided that we will pull smith and Tate for TE 3 and TE4.

My frustration is like many with questioning why our best players are taken off the field at crucial times. And Im probably wrong that Hartline is the one calling the plays, but Day gets the blame. in the end, win the games. But I think the offense should be put in better position at opportune times to put 7 on the board

That was the case in ‘23, but I think all these 13 /14 personnel packages are Hartline’s take on this offense. It’s the same as the beginning of ‘23 before Day took over.

The playoffs may be different with Hartline having less time to dedicate to the game plan.

It’s called engagement journalism. If he wrote something like, “Kirby Smart received the most amount of best coach nods from 24 of his peers,” engagement would be nil. These guys are the kings of contrived controversies.
