HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

He looks like a super villain with the beard.

2) OHIO STATE
10484218.jpg

Ryan Day, after swiping the keys to a Ferrari from Urban Meyer, is lapping the competition in the Big Ten at a high rate of speed. He helped salvage the Buckeyes' 2019 signing class, landed the No. 5 class during his first full season and ranked No. 2 in the 2021 cycle per the 247Sports Composite. Ohio State is right up there with Alabama and the rest of the elites in terms of national exposure in the NFL Draft and has an annual revenue that ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten. The Day hire was a calculated decision by Ohio State's administration with booster backing and thus far, he's been an absolute home run. If you take the Ohio State job, you are expected to win and win big quickly. There is no losing to Michigan, either.

'We have to win' – How Ryan Day is building Ohio State to beat Alabama

COLUMBUS – Ohio State’s 28-point loss to Alabama in last season's College Football Playoff title game rarely comes up in conversation around the Woody Hayes Center. But the corrective actions to close that gap are still distinct, even if rarely spoken about.

OSU head coach Ryan Day is as likely to trot out the old “We Want Bama” fan trope as he is to dye his hair Quinn Ewers’ blond hue. But the signs are obvious that Ohio State is operating to catch college football’s premier program.

With the Buckeyes recruiting at historic levels, staffing changes swiped from the Nick Saban handbook and the program taking on more of Day's identity, the evolution is clear. Day is building off the sturdy infrastructure left behind after Urban Meyer’s 83-9 run that ended after the 2018 season.

Day says flatly that his job is to win every game. And that’s why the latest alterations to the program are rooted in traversing the daunting final step from title game participant to crystal ball holder.

“We've kept a lot of what Coach Meyer did,” Day told Yahoo Sports in his office this week, “but we've also made it ours.”

I'm glad that Day isn't sugarcoating who we're going after. So many coaches pay more attention mainly to their conferences and rivals, that though Day and Co. know that scUM will always be the enemy, let's all be real here, they're not on our level. Bama and Clemson(1 big win doesn't erase our numerous big losses to them) are our main targets, and we will constantly be compared by our successes and failures against. All 3 teams are expected to win their conferences almost yearly now, and that is no longer seen as being as much of a success as in year's past.

I am with you 100%. I don't think Day will fail to account for the conference foes or rivals (which I don't think you were saying at all), but it is nice to hear we know exactly where we are at and know who we are fighting. It seemed apparent in our recruiting, but Day reinforcing it is awesome to hear. Day is making it abundantly clear we are here to be elite and win it all...just fucking say it, I love it.

Alabama, over the last decade, has won 5 national championships. They are the greatest dynasty in the modern football era. However, in that time, they have lost 3 games to their rivals, Auburn.

So let’s say over the next 10 years, Ryan Day is something like 6-4 against TTUN, but has 4 national titles in that span. But not just that. Let’s say those 4 wins TTUN has against Ohio State gets them back to national relevance. Now they are a playoff contender most years.

How would you all feel about that type of decade from Coach Day?

It may be a hot take, but I'd take the NCs. Honestly, no one outside of the Bama fanbase remembers the Auburn losses, and I can bet that right now they could care less about any of those losses as they are the current National Champs and the current #1 ranked. How much bragging can a scUM fanbase do when your biggest rival is multi time NC winner? Auburn hasn't done much talking lately, and they have at least a somewhat recent NC.
I'm sure we could all agree, that if Cooper had still lost those games to scUM, but brought home 1-2 NCs, his legacy would be much different. And he probably would've had a job much longer(same for Bruce as well)

Agreed. It’s funny because that question really makes some Ohio State fans think really hard. But imagine asking those same fans 20 years ago and changing the name Day to Tressel and there would be zero hesitation! Especially following the Cooper era.

I think back then, two things were different:
1. I agree most fans would give their first born for a win in The Game, let alone consecutive wins.
2. The NC wasn't as important then as it is now. There was no defined NC before the CFP, and many arguments could be made for multiple teams. And also, winning a NY6 bowl was actually a pretty big deal before the CFP. Fans would brag about winning Rose, Orange, Sugar Bowls, now no one really cares unless you make the CFP.

That’s not why every Ohio State fan would have taken that Faustian bargain 20 years ago. It’s because, 20 years ago, a 6-4 record against Michigan would have been a dramatic improvement over recent history in its own right. So, hell yes, people would take an improved record against Michigan, plus some national championships. But the standard now is, you don’t lose to those pricks, ever.
