HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I get the feeling this has been in the works for a while. Why else give Day the interim tag earlier this year when you have two coordinators with extensive HC experience? Pretty sure Urban has known this at least since August and picked Day as his successor.

This isn't an OU situation where the HC hung it up in May leaving no time to conduct a coaching search. If they wanted, tOSU has plenty of time to conduct a national search. This is a HUGE job. Deciding to skip the process and handing it right to Day tells me that Urban and the arhletic department feel fully confident that Day is their guy and that he can handle it.

That said, goodness those are some big shoes to fill. Simple common sense says we will take a step back from the last seven years. And we should be okay with that. Urban Meyer won at an obscene rate here and will be impossible to match. I just hope we can accept that.
No doubt but man it's gonna be HARD. Urban was undefeated in conference play his first three years here. That's absolutely obscene. Lost his next two by 3 in a monsoon and by 3 again in one of the flukiest fashions I've ever seen. 6 points is what separated Urban from having an undefeated conference record for five years straight. That's fucking nuts.

Day isn't from Ohio, first coach we've had in nearly 20 years that could be considered something of an "outsider". While I'm sure he has been baptised properly, my biggest fear is still rooted in the Cooper era.. Not being able to fully grasp and elevate the importance of The Game.

Provided he does this, then coach should do alright. Best of luck, the State of Ohio will soon be counting on you. No pressure.

I have zero concern about this because they're totally different situations.

- Coop came in from out west and had zero understanding of tOSU, its culture, traditions or priorities.
- Day has been on staff for two years under a coach who lived and breathed tOSU football. I'm sure it was pounded into him from day 1.

"What is the name of the stadium where Ohio State plays football" is, I believe, a test question for the position that was developed post Cooper to help avoid a repeat of those 13 years.

I can only assume Day passed it.

This is my biggest concern at the moment, but hopefully Urban and the others have put him on the right path with The Game and all that the rivalry means.

My only other concern is how he'll handle the behind the scenes kind of stuff, since this is his first real head coaching gig. Urban was still the coach on practice days those first few weeks, after all.

I like what we saw from Day at the beginning of the season and am not entirely willing to lay some of our later offensive problems solely on him. A semi-competent defense and this team is in the playoff with a good chance to win it.

I'm not glad that Urban's leaving, but I'm glad that he's doing it now. Any later and it fcuks up recruiting and we wind up risking losing Day to somewhere else. Sometimes the easy and obvious solution is harder to see/do. I'm glad we haven't fcuked that up.

I'm thinking, no inside info, that the support staff staying in tact and Urban being around in a consulting capacity can help with this quite a bit but yes, everytime I see a coordinator become a HC in a big time job I think about the CEO aspect, not just the X's and O's.

My guess, and that is all it is, is that we see the core of Day on offense and Grinch on defense with other staffers getting on with the next phase of their careers.

Seems like they hit a homerun with Hartline but time will tell.

Larry Johnson is the only member of the staff on offense or defense that I am 100% certain would be a loss if he were to leave.

Crazily enough, I think the level of coaches on the staff will go up. Replace the "friends/family" coaches, hold the staff accountable, no loyalties. Keep LJ (fingers crossed, although I think this is his door), Grinch, Hartline, Wilson, Alford and support staff. Let Day decide if Schinao (unless he decides on his own) is still high level as well as Stud. Show the door to Davis and Johnson.
