HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

There's also the matter that the greatest year 1-5 coach in CFB history, Urban Meyer, is not quite good enough for OSU standards, especially if he's not facing a deeply flawed big ten (which Day and his replacement will not be).

He was perfect against a bad Michigan program and that covered a lot of warts.

Urban is not Nick, but was clearly #2 behind him by a significant margin (ahead of Kirby). And the cart not only lost a few wheels, it careened off a cliff down the stretch of Urban's tenure.
The whitewashing of Urban’s years 4-7 are truly astounding

Edit: I can’t count

One very underrated thing that Ryan Day faced this year was 4 top-5 matchups (whether or not PSU/IU are actually those is not super relevant). How often did Tressel have to empty his bag of tricks this many times? 2006? And then he had the 2nd worst post season outing in OSU history (behind Clemson).

He also probably had to save something for Oregon next week, which would have been followed by 1-2 more top 5 matchups to win it all, bringing the grand total to 6-7. That's a crazy number of times you must be elite and diverse.

That's not to excuse the decision to ask Treveyon to play in a phone booth with the greatest DTs in CFB over the past 3 years, but it does shed light on being tight in certain spots.
A 10-2 Ohio State team is in the CFP every season. Point blank. Brand matters. Consistency matters. Sad as it is for a lot of people, The Game just doesn't have that same impact it once did in a 10 game season, 1 bowl only season. I think that will factor into the consideration as well.
Hire the next Jim Tressel to self scout and fix the things that are being overlooked.

Recruiting kickers
Learning how to flip the field in special teams. It's a weapon, not a failure. And if it is a failure, stop punting at the other team's 37.
Learning how to save your best for Michigan
Keeping Ohio OL home, in bulk
Getting blue collar LBs, not just pro bowl athletes that are projects at playing the position

(I think JL is fixing the last one, though that took too long)

I think he's here no matter what, so I'm not going to stress it anymore. Only thing that might dislodge him is a real embarrassing blowout loss at home in the cfp.

I know people have conveniently forgotten about the cheating now that it doesn't fit their narrative, but let's wait and see how legit two or three of those tcun losses really were.

This loss to a already bad scUM team who was also depleted by injuries who’s not cheating is so bad that I don’t think it matters.

Davis Warren did exactly what Speight did. He just threw game ending INTs into spots where the guy could not quite run them back for six.

If Speight throws his picks at sock level, does OSU win those games with Hooker falling down to catch them?

scUM was #3 and 10-1 going into that game. I think that’s a bad comparison

I honestly don't think Freeman would be interested. I don't think his stupid comments disqualify him, but I don't think he'd want it. ND is going to open up the bank for him after this year, and he'll have at least a few years of solid job security.. He seems to like it there also. Why walk into a complete rebuild for equal money?

I'm of the opinion to keep Day for now, while seeing how Eddie George progresses. If, however, everyone hits the portal and the recruiting class blows up then what the hell. Nothing to lose in making the change now.

One other name is Odom at UNLV. Relatively young guy who's turned a historic dumpster fire into a team that might sneak into the playoffs.
Only thing is Eddie has said on a couple occasions that he didn't have interest in the OSU job. Obviously that could change, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Listening to Kings of Columbus right now. Doug and Landis are selling me on Mike Vrabel.

Please let it happen.
Problem is, Vrabes has said numerous times he won't come back to College ball, even for OSU. He hates recruiting and doesn't like the portal and NIL climate. Considering the job he has in Cleveland, there's a pretty good chance he'll be the next coach of the Browns if they fire Stefanski after the season.

I have 99.9% expectations Vrabel would not be the HC here, but the bigger question to me would be - how much recruiting would he have to do if he came here. You have a loaded staff that can recruit, does Vrabel pretty much stay home and just help close the deals on visits? With a GM, I doubt there is much involvement he'd have with NIL and the portal. He can focus on coaching, forced into some fundraising, but it's interesting to consider how you could frame it as enjoyable as possible for him.

So, at least 27 seniors on the roster and gone for next year. Most of the defensive line and backfield. Most of the offensive line, an NFL level receiver, both running backs, a borderline draft-level QB gone. I suspect that the QB room will be cut in half by the end of spring football. Don't know how committed to the program J. Smith is. I guess we'll find out as soon as the portal opens.

Open with Texas, close at AA, road trip to Seattle in between.

Gonna be a steep learning curve for next year's team. One thing is sure, a great deal of effort is needed to put the O and D lines back to Tressel/Meyer levels.

I hope the recruiting/portal-guys/bag men and Day are up to the task.

People acting like our roster is about to get raided are overreacting a bit imo. Unless there is coaching change, dont see that happening because they lost a game.

Doug was saying Vrabel has said he'd come back for the OSU job. If that's true, sign me up.

FWIW, I think the buyout figure is accurate; but the question remains who would pay for it?

No buy out if he walks away. I’m of the opinion that his mental health cannot withstand the pressure and heat of this job any longer. Get dog walked in round 1 running 39 plays into the DT’s arms at Tennessee will be enough to get him to quit.
